HELP! prolapse after sperm plug removed :/

hi, after reading threads about sperm plug that have harden and needs to be removed manually, i learned a lot of things and began soaking my male veiled in warm water for 8minutes and then tried pulling out 2 big plugs stuck in his hemipenis. im a little worried because it's been 10minutes passed and one of his hemipenis has not pop back in. could this be a prolapse? before pulling the big plug his hemipenis was not exposed. i carefully pulled the plug im sure i did not hurt him. i need suggestions please

Get ky jelly and try to massage it back in.

Or make a sugar paste and apply it until it shrinks up on its own.

Or got to a vet.

Not sugar paste - you don't want grains of sugar getting caught up in his 'bits'! What people suggest is sugar water to help it shrink back down and retract. Whatever you do you need to keep it moist until it retracts or you can get him to a vet (which you should do if it doesn't go back in on its own). I have never experienced a hemipenal prolapse, thankfully, but I am sure someone who has will help you more. If the prolapse is severe it will require the vet to re-insert the hemipenis and possibly have the vent temprarily stitched so that it doesn't prolapse again straight away.

will the sugar paste help it to shrink back on its own? or it helps with the moisture? i already applied KY jelly. it has not gone back in yet. if ever i am taking him to the vet, what will i tell the vet? we dont have a vet that specializes on reptiles but our vet is willing to help. she just doesn't know what to do with the situation. although she has performed an operation on snakes before. if the hemipenis doesnt come back in, will the next resort be operation? i need suggestions please :( thanks for the help!

thanks Miss Lily, what's a sugar water? will it make the hemipenis shrink? or just keep it moisten? i have applied ky jelly. what will i tell the vet? to push the hemipenis back in and stitch part of the vent so that it wont prolapse again? just part of the vent right? not the whole vent? and for how long will the stitch be there before we take it off? thanks! we dont have a vet that deals with reptiles here in our country :(i really need suggestions thanks

When my veiled had a prolapse, we put sugar paste on it to try and shrink it. Which is basically just a ton of sugar and water. It supposedly shrinks it back down. Didn't work for my baby. I had to take him to the vet and he had to have surgery to put it back in.

You do not want to wait, the tissue will become necrotic and after that it can infect the living tissue.

You would tell the vet that your chameleon has a hemipenal prolapse, and tell them what you have tried and ask them what they think you should do.

It has to be a chameleon vet. Do not take him to a regular vet for this. If a regular vet says that they can fix it instead of going to a specialist, go to the specialist.

thanks! if only we have a vet that specializes in reptiles here in our city but we dont. we only have one or two in the entire country which is two islands away from where i am so i am left with the vet i have been bringing my chameleon to. she does however make phone calls to the reptile vet and ask for suggestions. i just want to know what procedures to ell the vet. i am aking my chameleon to the vet first thing in the morning since it's midnight here in our country. thanks!

what did the vet do to your chameleon? did he opened and insert the hemipenis back in or just massage it back and stitch the vent? for how long should the stitch be there?thanks

i have had to "fix" a couple proplapse. Here is how I did it.

1. ice cold water with lots of water. Not a paste but Ice cold water with lots of sugar fairly well dissolved. I sat for about 15 minutes and kept gently pouring the ice water over my baby.

2. Next take ky jelly and massage it back into where it needs to be. When I say massage, be gentle but be prepared to put some pressure behind it. First time I just rubbed like it would jump in, not so, you have to press about 3 times as much pressure as you would think.

3. After you get it in watch him carefully for the next couple days to make sure he doesn't proplapse again.

4. If you can't get it in, take these directions to your vet. The process is the same as a dog, cat or cow. The animal is just smaller.

Great info Laurie! I am saving your post in case of an emergency that I hope will never happen with any of my chams.
I also would like to know if this is good to do with intestinal or uterine prolapses also, or is this only the way to help for the hemipenes?

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I will admit that when my male B. transvaalense prolapsed, I went to the vet. No way I was going to try a 3 gram chameleon by myself. He is 6 grams and still going strong.:)

I would try what Laurie said.

And kind of. He put it back in and stitched it.

But the vet I went to didn't know what he was doing. He over dosed my cham and he died. The surgery went fine it was the pain meds after that they got wrong.

But if that's the only vet there is take him. If he needs the surgery get it, but be very careful with the pain meds.

There is some bad advice in this thread. And some good advice.

If still an issue, keep it clean by spraying with water. Rinse it clean. Then sprinkle it with powdered suger, creating a reverse osmotic effect. Sugar pastes and granulated sugar may work, but sprinkled powdered sugar is the time-proven remedy. The suger will hurt NOTHING !

If the hemipene is allowed to dry, or become infected or swollen, then you have an issue requiring a vet.

I would reject any treatment involving "pain meds". Your critter died after vet care, so it would seem difficult to recommend a similar path. Pain meds make no sense to me.

If needed, amputation of a hemipene is not a difficult task for a vet, followed by about 7 days of antibiotics. It is that simple.

hi! we just got home from the vet. I tried what laurie instructed but the hemipenis keeps coming out so i decided to bring my little guy to the vet. the vet applied mannitol on the prolapse area and put him to sleep via general anesthesia. she stitched up both sides of the vent :) we will be visiting the vet after a week and see if she could remove the stitch by then. do i need to apply anything on the vent to help with the swelling? can i spray water on him for misitng? and if there's anything i could give to him to help with the swelling or any meds please let me know :) i would like to give my boy everything i can without hurting him.

I don't have any idea on meds you could give him, but I am very happy to see that he is going to be fine.

I wasn't recommending the pain meds thank you. It didn't make sense to me but I did what the doctor said and he died. I was simply giving them all the facts that I was told by a vet.
