Help!

Hello!
Here is a video a fellow forum member, Jdog, has made. It has great information, and hits on all aspects of jackson husbandry. It is a little long, but I believe you will find it very helpful.

Also, about the bulb. It being inside the cage increases the risk of injury. You will need to put alot of water through her cage, this can easily short the fixture out, and or cause the bulb to explode. The result would be glass and phosphorous(both very harmful to her!) shooting through the cage, with extreme force. Light should be provided from above, as it is in nature. This not only psychologically benificial to the chameleon, but will make sense to her as she tries to regulate UVB/heat.
Welcome, and ask all questions you may have.;)

If you provide a full picture of her setup, we may be able to help you further :)

The bulb is located in the upper right corner of her cage so I think psychologically she'll be ok. Thanks for the link!

Yea, I fixed her lighting set up. Need to grab a few more branches for her, too bad its snowing and 7 degrees outside in cbus right now.

gutload with flukers high calcium cricket diet.
crickets also recieve calcium fortified cricket quencher(gel cubes).
You will need to improve her gutloading. A good place to learn about nutrition is sandrachameleon's blog:
https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/

Dust with, Repti Calcium with D3.
Jacksons need very little supplementation compared to other chameleons. Calcium with D3 should be given, at most, once a month. Plain calcium 1-2 times a week, and a multivitamin once a month.
female jackson's, Lana is her name, shes 7 months old.
Temperatures very in the cage from mid 60s in lower shady veg spots to 85 in basking spots.
She's fed 2-3 times daily, crickets, wax worms, meal worms, super worms, silk worms, house flies.
Fecal is healthy, she came from a breeder here in Columbus.
She is misted 3-4 times daily with a spray bottle.
Drip system also in place.
I see her drink daily.
Repti Glo T8 18'' uvb 5.0 with mylar to reflect light in multiple directions.
12 on/off light schedule
She was used to being handled often so I handle her often and she loves it.
Cage is 2x2x5. There is a picture of cage posted on first thread. It is built into the corner of the room and has 2 screen walls.
Cage is located 3 feet off the ground, top of cage is roughly 8 feet from actual ground in bed room.
Plants: Golden Pothos and schefflera.

Just a few thoughts, Jdog covers everything in his video.

Hi,
im hearing that UVB rays cannot pass through plastic? The Zilla Slimline that I bought has a plastic cover slip screwed on just under the bulb.. should I take this off so that the bulb is exposed?

And good luck with Lana :)

YES! UVB cannot pass through anything(almost). It doesnt even pass through screen all that well:rolleyes::p

If you ever have any questions, in addition to posting here, you can also PM me, or almost any other forum member.;)

Mantis FTW, I am having trouble finding the fixture you are talking about. Your saying it has a cover on the OUTSIDE of the bulb? Or inbetween the bulb and fixture?

YES!.... You need to get rid of it.;) UVB is very important.. especially for us liveing where we cant get our chams out into the real sun. I cant express the importance enough. Everyone should have a Solar Meter. most lighting people say you should bask at high 30's to mid40's on the meter and replace when they get below 20. New reports show even higher readings are good with the new bulbs.Even respected bulbs can vary ALOT!! New Reptisuns can vary from 30-90 readings. Without a meter you can bask your cham for 6 months with no UVB at all if your bulb isnt up to par and the distance is over 8 inches. That is not good!

I know what fixture you speak of because I also had a plastic cover on mine, I took the cover off a long time ago and just ran the fixture with no cover.

I don't think that's 100% correct. Here's a post sandrachameleon made a while ago, it indicates she has special plexiglas used for tanning beds and her UVB meter shows transmission is good.

However, most plexiglas and other acrylics do block UVB, so it would be important to know for sure what you have.

Did you move the UVB so she can get alot closer? A 5.0 bulb at 20"s wont give her what she needs even without screen blocking it;) If you hang it from above she cant get to it.

:p The solarcryl stuff is why I said ALMOST:p

Jacksons require lower amounts of UVB in general. I beleive their intention is to put more climby things up top though, that way she will get plenty;)

OK.... Im not real informed on Jackson requirements. For an example.. I have a free range for Ernie (I posted a thread earlier today) I use a 160 watt Sun Force Mercury Vapor bulb set at 17 inches. This gives me 80 degrees temp at his branch and a reading of low 60's on my meter. This is good. I just am not sure a 5.0 flouresent at 20"s is going to do much:confused:

Well they still need it, and I keep mine(I dont have a solar meter) 3-8" under the 5.0 reptisun. Well I should say thats as close as she can get to it. She rarely stays above the "canopy" though. Jacksons just stay in denser cloud cover/foliage in the wild, and dont get the straight sun like other species. I feel I was missleading, but I was just trying to say that I thought it would be fine provided they offer higher branches:eek:
