He's a big fat jerk.

Advice!!!

Sorry to interrupt this discussion, but I just signed on the this site and don't know how to start a fresh question. We just got a veiled chameleon from a boy who didn't want to be responsible anymore. I know nothing about them, so I've been googling like crazy and stopped in the pet store. We live about 40 miles from the nearest pet store, so I had to order a UV light from amazon, they didn't have one for the cage (strange). Now I'm wondering if I should use a regular light bulb for basking or a infrared heat lamp. I got it at the farm store, but have not used it. I don't know if he is staying warm enough. He is not adjusting well, he is gray in color with green spots. How long will it take for him to settle in? We try and leave him alone. I have 2 little boys and I don't know if he is freaking out about them or just the move or both. I feel like if I found a more calming home for him he might get super stressed from the move. Any advice would be great, from feeding crickets to cleaning cages. I would love it. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum first off and congrats on taking a chameleon in. There are alot of things that go into making a chameleon happy and healthy and we will help you out along the way so dont freak out. first of I am going to post this how to ask for help questionnaire and go through and kind of explain everything that you might not understand. This will help us get an idea of what conditions he is living in and help us give you advice on things you'll need.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? * Gut-loading is the term used for what you feed the feeder insect*

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? * If you haven't been using supplements, Most people recommend calcium without D3 every feeding, calcium with D3 on the 1st and 15th of every month and a multi-vitamin supplement on the 7th and the 30th of each month, just make sure you alternate between the two each week.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? *Poop should have a white part called a urate and then the actually feces should be solid and brown, if the urate is orange he needs more water.*

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
*Basking spot temp should be in the high 80's for a younger veiled and mid to low 90's for adults I believe. You want the cage to be cooler down at the bottom around 70*

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? * humidity should be around 40-50% with a few spikes up to around 80-90% a couple times a day. You need a hygrometer to measure the humidity.*

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?

Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? * you want the top of the cage to be higher than eye level, the higher the cage is the more secure they feel.*

Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

I hope this helps you out, and someone correct me if I misinformed them please. I think this will be a good start for us to helps you get on the right track to give that baby a good life:)

Thank you for the last 2 posts! I have only had Sunny for not even a week yet. He is a male veiled about 2 years old. He was ok when we brought him home, he was crawling all over me and on my head very cute. Now when I try to reach in to say hello, he hisses and tries to bite. The boy who had him before held him often, but said he was bit once.
I know I am not keeping his home warm enough. I don't know how to get the temp up. I just bought a villa UV bulb on amazon, and using a regular light until I can get one from the pet store. I bought an infrared heat lamp at the farm store but didn't know if I could use it. We live in Minnesota by the way. It's chilly up here.
I mist his cage 2 times a day, and I have a water dish. I heard not to, but also to have one??? The lady at the pet store said to chop up some raw potatoes for the crickets, I have to get them some feeder food I think. I do use the calcium every day. He eats about 8-10 crickets per day, I bought the worms but he is not interested in those at all. The pet store lady thought I should give him 12 a day.
He is in a mesh cage, and it is tall. I have it on a taller dresser. I have to get on a stool to turn his light off. I have fake plants in there now.
Also his droppings look very normal from what I have researched.
We haven't got to hold him since we brought him home, we have just been checking on him and saying hi, but he isn't very happy right now. Actually since I put the UV bulb in yesterday he is more active walking around quite a bit. But I'm stressing about getting the heat up. The humidity level is perfect just not the heat. He needs a sweater! :)
Am I forgetting anything? I just want him to live and be healthy!!!!

Yeah chameleons are not a pet that should be handled as it stresses them out pretty bad and chameleons can die from stress. Do you have a space heater you can put by his cage for now? he needs a basking light and a uvb light, you should cancel the zilla bulb and get a reptisun as they are alot better. If you go to screameleons.com, they have alot of information on what you need to care for the chameleon and they even have a free three day course that teaches how to care for a chameleon through emails. here's a video on how to setup a veiled cage as well, http://youtu.be/TrwzGgb_Neg

Taking it out - about 4.8 seconds.

Putting it back - long time... I ripped some wires and screen a tad.

Sounds about right :)......be glad you didn't do it in the dark (looking for an annoying loud cricket) and break the brand new uv tube.........;)

lol that is awesome. I would totally draw on a little toilet bowl where the drain is. :p

Hahah I would but the entire bottom of his cage is the drain. After making the cage I decided to cut out the bottom wood, I put two 2x4's parallel and put heavy chicken mesh onto of them, which I set the cage ontop of. Under that I have a drainage bin my dad ordered that I just slide in and out. Bobo has atleast 200 toilets.
