Hibiscus Questions

I got a hibiscus in an exo terra glass terrarium. I've only had it in there about 8-10 days and i've got a few questions on it.

mine seems to get a new flower in bloom every second day but they shrivel off and die within a day. is this normal?

what sort of watering should i do? is it enough just to mist the soil for a few seconds when i'm misting the rest of the cage (like was suggested to me for my hoya plant) or should it be getting additional water?

thanks! :)

I am not plant expert, but my hibiscus blooms like that too. So i am guessing that is normal. I feed the blooms to my veiled and bearded dragon they love them. I do water mine about 3 times a week. It seems if the leaves start to droop at all that it requires water.

Mine flower like that as well.

I have to water mine alot, just about everyday for them to do well. ;/

By that I mean extra watering on top of all my mistings.

When I first started using them indoors, the leaves got yellow, and I thought they were being OVER watered, so I cut back.

But yes, they seem to do best with plenty of water for me.

You can use the flowers and leaves for gutload for your bugs. Mine didn't do well in the enclosure, so I took it out and i have it at a window. I water once a week. If you put water crystals in your dirt you won't have to water as much.

In order to keep them flowering they need some sunlight. I have never been successful keeping them in my indoor cages, but Monty has one in his outdoor cage and it gets sunlight most days, and thus far it seems to be doing very well.

I have them outside in my yard in Florida. They flower year round, needs lots of sunlight and yes the flowers only last one day and then they die.

allright, thanks everybody! glad to hear its not just me somehow mistreating the plant.

as for the lighting, i've got quite a bit on it. i have the reptisun 5.0 linear (36 inch), 2 grow lights that are 6500k and a basking bulb at 25w (or is it 40w? i cant remember. markings rubbed off). so far it seems to be doing well within the glass and hopefully it stays that way. only time will tell there. i asked in a previous thread if i overdid it with lights and nobody said anything against it, so i figured i could try the hibiscus.

anyway!! my hoya is doing almost too well in the cage and i have vines that are growing over an inch (or two) per day. i was told when it starts flowering it always comes back in the same place, but mine isn't old enough to do so (its about 3-4 years old and flowers start around 4-5 from what i understand). is this true? also, is it safe to trim the plant?

My Hibiscus is a "dwarf".. I trim it to keep it small and not outgrow the enclosure.. So trimming is not a problem.

i was asking about trimming my hoya actually. it has the flowering things that becomes an issue. i'm not worried about my hibiscus yet. its fairly small (12-14 inches tall)
