Hiding food?

New Cham owner here! I began feeding my baby veiled meal worms when I first got him which he ate just fine but I've recently switched to live crickets. His enclosure has a wood chip like bed that a PetCo emplyoee recommended for humidity but I am worrying that the crickets are digging themselves in it to hide. I have shuffled it up and haven't seen any but they match the color so idk. Is it recommended to break the crickets legs before putting them in the enclosure or is he getting his food?

I would recommend removing the wood chips, it is not recommended and some of the members will rip you out for that (Substrate can cause impaction) . Just use the carpet-like material that you can buy in pet stores, I personally use that and find it to work very well. If you need humidity live plants work well, they help keep the humidity and good long misting sessions will help also.

Loco Petco will try sell u everything that u dont need,my friend went there to get a can of cat food ,they try to sell her a dish food holder,Im surprise, she didnt walk out with some can opener or even a cat scratcher house:rolleyes:
Here is some resource from the forum, happy reading

Btw u dont have to break the cricket legs, unless the Petco employees will do it for u with their recommendations perhaps

I had one but threw it away because I read that the carpet kind caused impaction. :( I just cleaned out the wood chips and put down some paper towels but I found that the crickets still try to crawl under that. GRRRR. Guess I will just be breaking legs:cool: how many crickets a day would you recommend for a baby? I've read a lot but I get worried I'll over feed him since he's so little.

The carpet causing impactions? That makes no sense and most people on here recommend it or paper towels (Good move on your part)

I may be wrong so instead I would recommend you take a look at the care sheet on here https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/veiled/

Just wondering, why even put paper towels? You dont need anything in there. Also, dont listen to anything the petco/petsmart employees tell you, they are just trying to sell you stuff you dont need. And you cant really overfeed a baby cham, feed them as much as they will eat a day.

Feed as many as he will eat. He's a growing boy! Seriously though, as a baby, feed him all he wants.

I would suggest filling out the how to ask for help questions in the health clinic forum. Just a hunch but chances are they told you a lot of wrong info. Let us help you get back on the right track to give him a great life. Just copy and paste them here and we can help you make sure all is good.

As other have said, feed as much as he will eat. Mine is around 2-3 months old and is eating 6-8 crickets twice per day so probably around 12-16 (give or take a couple) per day. I also throw a couple undusted crickets in so he doesnt get lazy waiting for the feeder cup and actively hunts throughout the day
