..so, i just got off the phone with a local florist here in NYC, i asked if they had any small sized ficus trees in stock, they said yes..blah blah blah.

i asked for size and price, he said 20" tall...$80

just when i thought i finally found a place here that sells them, he drops that bombshell on me.

craziness.

and yes, i do know that LLL sells them a helluvalot cheaper, but shipping temps are no good.

Go to one of the big box hardware stores. They carry ficus and schefflerra. I can get 6-7 fters for less than $80 at my local garden center. Thats just stupid money for a plant....;)

Holy ficus batman!!!

$80!!!! That is outrageous! I know they aren't trees, but I got mine at Lowe's and Home Depot for about $20, and they fit perfectly in my 24x24x48 cages.

how big do the smaller ones cost.

i was wandering if there was a dwarf breed i could get that i could like prune.

if there was one to go to, i would! there is a home depot a few miles from here, but thats $30 just to get there(taxi)

You could Make a tree for about 3 bucks. just go to home depot, buy a sample tile (1 sq. ft.) for about 90 cents, depending onn size cage, buy a piec of circular wood like the one that would go in ur closet where u hang ur cloths on. get different size branches, drill holes at an angle, trim if not make end of branch just thick enough so it fits snugg in hole. flip tile upside down to drill a whole so that wooden pole stands up stright (2" wood screw) or use GORILLA gle, the non foming. once ur done trim to fit ur cage. all u have to do now is buy less expensive plants. The time it took me to do i wa about 30-45 min.

That really stinks! I get them at Lowes and such here as well. I can't imagine having to pay for a taxi and then get the darn tree home!!! I think our sit sponser Kammers Kreations Chameleons Only sells some on thier site cheaper (not sure how big). Might want to check them out with shipping I'm sure it is less.

Was this place on 44th and 11th Ave??

If so , they are outragious with their prices!! They had a PERFECT 4' ficus but wanted $155.

There is a Home Depot on 23rd street that has Ficus for $40 (but they are between 4'-6'!) They also posted that they sell bonsia Ficus that are under 20" ,but didn't have any at the time.

There is a place in Brooklyn that has a tonnnnnn of cheap Ficus and Hibiscus. Its at the Brooklyn Terminal Market.

I don't mind mailordering. But i like to hand-pick a tree for my home or a cage!

i saw the F. benjamina on kammers, $30 including shipping..but yeah, temps are no good..don't want to end up with a dead or dying plant.

If you find a place that has good plants for cheap in the Manhattan area. I will take a trip with you and save you the cost of a cab!

I am planning a trip to the Brooklyn Terminal Market maybe next weekend after Christmas, if you wanna come with.

Now lets consider the location and time of year of the OP. If the person is growing the ficus them self I can understand why one would want so much for it.

I would just go with an umbrella plant because I find that they grow much faster with less work. They can become tree-like and well over 5 feet tall with a little effort. And a bunch of pothos.

And by the way, a 4-6 foot ficus for $40 is great. At nurseries around here they go for that price or more and I'm in norcal where I can keep a ficus outside all year as an evergreen!

i'd have to assume, since they are a florist, that they are getting them from a nursery somewhere. i have never seen any schefflera for sale anywere local..i guess i'll have to check out that place in brooklyn that jon mentioned.

i've always used pothos, because it's so abundant around here. i have a huge plant in my male veiled's cage..but i wanted to go with a tree for a new panther coming in.
