Houseflies

What kind of setup do you have to keep those things from all flying away as soon as you open the lid? I think house flies would be great but maintaining them can't be much fun, or is it?

The Kammers are in SoCal outside of LA, I think.

I also found a place called Spiderpharm.com that sells housefly pupae. Out of AZ. Their shipping is kind of high, and I haven't been able to get the hatching to stagger on the large batches with refridgeration. I mean, who needs 3000 flies all at once?

Put them in the fridge for about 10 minutes before opening. That slows them down enough to tap some out into the cages. Then they warm up in a few seconds and start flying around the cage.

Any real reason to not catch your own?

I simply use an equestrian fly trap that I remove the fly bait from. In it's place I just leave a small piece of cardboard I rubbed a piece of raw hamburger on. The scent seems to attract the flies and I end up with about 20 in no time.

I would if they wore shoes and took it off before my cham ate em.. hahaha .. just kidding.. :D

On a serious note, it's because I live in the city and who knows where they've been. Probably eating doggie poop.. I don't want them carrying anything that would cause my cham a trip to the vet.

Mantis place sells bot flys in pupae form. Bot flys are quite a bit bigger than house flys. The are very easy to hatch and take care of. The only problem is trying to stagger them for a constant supply of flys. I think the website name is mantisplace.com. I ordered my first batch of 500 about 10 days ago and their now hatching at regular intervals. My chams love them. I also feel safer about these as I can control what they've eaten. Bot flys are generally rotten flesh eaters so be careful about feeding caught ones.

Lab flies :)

Lab flies are great. I would not feed wild caught flies though. Who knows what they have been doing or eating. Yucky yucky yuck! I buy from Liddy at Kammerflage. I let her buy them in huge quantities and split them up. I keep the pupae in the fridge and take small numbers out at a time to hatch at room temperature. I stick them in the freezer for about two minutes before I feed them out. I just have to make sure I don't get interupted then. They are super slow after the freezer stint but revive. A great feeder for smaller chams.

hi, Catherine.. ya mind splitting them in three with me? :D
i also love feeding my cham house flies.
how long does the pupa can be stored in the fridge?

The housefly pupae can be store in the frig for 3 days. If you leave them chilled more than that they tend to diminish rapidly.

Hmmmmmmmm......

I keep mine in the fridge for several weeks. But I do have a Sub Zero fridge that has separate controls for different areas. I've got my fly pupae and butterworms in a drawer that is set a little warmer. I did not set it up that way on purpose (I used to keep lettuce in it) and did not realize the pupae might die if it was not warmer. Dodolah, I'm already just buying smaller quantities from Liddy at Kammerflage. She's the one who buys in quantity. There may be other people here that want to split up a big order though :)

Dodolah, Mantisplace.com sell pupae for $5.85 for 500. That's for the bot flies but I think houseflys are the same price. They also sell a neat little kit called jar-o-flies or something like that. It includes everything you'll need to hatch and feed them. I think it's about two dollars.

Howdy,

I wish a local keeper (not me ) out here in Southern California would start raising Blue Bottle houseflies (larvae etc.) to sell for local pick-up :).

Dave I just bought a few cultures of blue bottle flies and plan on raising them. Once I get a sustainable colony going I could probably supply you with some.
