I have a Male and Female Senegal Chameleon, I know they don't do well with other chameleons That they fight so I've never tried to Introduce them to eachother! Today I find my Male acting really strange moving from the top of the cage to the bottom back and forth for a few! first thing I did was check the temp of the cage right on No change in temp! I have put sand in the bottom of both cages just incase. I tried to feed him nothing water just stressed him out! I left him alone and watched him for a few hours still doing it up and down back and forth all over his cage... I got to thinking maybe he was looking for a mate (STUPID CHOICE ON MY PART!!!) So I feed My female gave her a drink made her happy let her rest and tried to introduce her to my male with in seconds of the intoduction they were fighting like Komodo Dragons!!! keep in mined it was long enough for them to lock lips and I pulled her back so No I didn't sit there and watch them fight:( My question is this if they fight so fast how do you breed incaptivity????? Will they go 10 rounds of flesh ripping fighting then have make-up fun???? I feel Bad I made a stupid choice today no one got hurt thank goodness I will not try it again:( Now I need this question answered to Educate Myself and be come a better Chameleon owner! Thanks for you're time.....

Two things. One, why did you put sand in the bottom of their cages? Two, you hold one OUTSIDE the other's cage, so they see eachother, and if the female doesn't gape or hiss then she'll usually be fine.

I was told If you don't have contaner full of sand the female could fill up with eggs and die from not having a place to lay them

You put a 12 inch deep and 12 inch wide container full of moist play sand, in her enclosure. Make it so it's not too wet to fall apart and not too dry, so she can be able to dig tunnels. You may want to research alot longer before trying to breed. How old are they?

Yes to the container and reptisand! They are 9 month old! Super cool pets I just love them I feel super bad for a poor choice on my part.....

You don't put it in the male's cage, don't put them in with eachother first you show them eachother through a barrier such as a screen and see reaction, and you shouldn't start breeding til after they're a year old just to be safe.

By the way Veiled Chameleons and Senegal are different species, which kind do you have? They are sexually mature at 9 months old, but usually we wait until they are at least a year old. Females will show receptive colours when they are ready to breed.

First I would tell you to seriously read the links Jann posted. Second would be to determine the actual species of your chameleons, and then if they are actually the sex that you think they are.

Why not post pics of your Chams and their enclosures for some feedback and guidance?

This forum has a lot of support to offer someone new to the hobby, who is looking to learn more.

I wouldn't worry about breeding right away.

If you don't know the species you have that could be the number one reason you should not breed them whatever species they are, Veiled Chameleons (not Vailed) have large clutches, sometimes very large and you need to be prepared for that, time and money wise. You most certainly will not make any money off of them as by the time you feed the babies, baby bins, lighting, supplements etc you'll probably have spent more than you could sell them for. If you don't mind that though it's neat to hatch babies and go through the process (and it is quite a process). Janns links will be great for you and also, just research research research on here, online..google the species you have (you can go to google images to compare and determine which you have) and determine their needs, cross reference, make sure parents are healthy and free of disease such as MBD or other and go from there. Keep on asking questions that's the best thing you can do, there are so many people on here willing to help.

and tried to introduce her to my male with in seconds of the intoduction they were fighting like Komodo Dragons!!! My question is this if they fight so fast how do you breed incaptivity?????

First, when they are separated they should not even be able to see each other because that will keep them stressed all the time.

Second, the female will only allow the male near her if she's hormonally receptive. If she's not receptive she'll fight or run.

I'm confused about which species you have too.

well its all a matter if the female is ready, try to put them together and if your female is showing signs ( turns bright and black) then she is not ready, but sometimes there is no signs, they will just fight so try putting them together some other time ( in about 3-5 months id say) but maybe just in case dont listen to me, i dont know much on breeding, i just reaad an article on it in my chameleon book :/

oops My bad My Chameleons are Sengeals

lol Sorry they are sengeal I was looking at a Awesome Picture of someones Veiled on here right before I wrote this so I guess I titled it Veiled sorry for the mix up But yes they are 9 month old Sengeals all post pic soon! And No they are not right next to eachother I have them in two diffrent places in my house Thanks for all you're help

what link do i go to upload pictures here

One of you asked for pictures hoe do I upload them see no link?

Generally Senegals only produce a couple of clutches a year...that would mean that a lot of the year the female would likely be unreceptive for quite a good part of the year. Your female's behavior to the male is indicating that she is not receptive or maybe gravid.

The photos under breeding show gravid colors except for the top two which show receptive colors....
