How DO you make plant cuttings?

How exactly do you make plant cuttings. I heard you just cut a few leaves off and burry them in some soil. Is this true?

What type of plant?
With a Pothos you would take more than a leaf ... you need a piece of vine.
Stick it in a container of water and wait for roots to sprout.
You can do cuttings of hibiscus as well .. a decent sized branch pushed into a small square of florists foam. Bury this in a pot of dirt and water it well.

Well, what type of cuttings do you want to do? There is stem and leaf cutting, I can help you with either process.

Well which one do you think you would want to do? They are completly different in ways you have to do it.

Ok, well I've studied this for two years so I know about it.

Ok, first of all, you are going to be cutting up a plant. So if you have a big plant, I am going to just let you know it will be small if you want a bunch of little plants. Ok, first off, you will need hand pruners. Then, take the plant, and where the a stem that is at least half an inch thick, cut it into 3 inch pieces. Make sure to keep it moist, since you have Chameleons, spray the soil with water everyday twice a day. Keep in mind the plant is in shock from being cut so the water will help it not to die. Then what you are going to need to do is in the next two days, is too watch it, it might have shoots on it. If it doesn't give it a bit more sunlight and a bit more water. Make sure you take the leaves off it also because they will suck up all of the water so they can create food, you want the plant to grow, not keep the same stuff alive. The pot size you will need is 3" pots. I know I'm forgetting something but if you have anymore questions I will be happy to help. Hope this helps.

P.S- What kind of plant are you going to be cutting?

You might be able to get it to sprout because it usually needs a good amount of water.

with plant cutting does it have to be with the stem the actual middle part of the plant or can you use branches which are comming off the stem? I think they are known as internodes or something.

It depends which type of plant. For a croton plant, which I wanted to try soon, it can be very difficult and take a long time.

http://en.allexperts.com/q/House-Plants-721/Croton-Plants.htm:

"Use sharp scissors or knife and cut just above the point where a leaf attaches to the stem. You decide on just where on the stem you want to make that cut - the plant does not care.

The cutting can be rooted in moist potting mix, but not easily. You have to use a damp, peat-based potting mix in a small pot. Then the pot and cutting have to be enclosed in a clear plastic bag that you blow up and seal. This will keep the soil damp and the air around it humid. Protect it from direct sun so that it does not overheat inside the bag. After a 4-6 weeks, gradually open and remove the plastic bag over the course of a week. By then you should have functioning roots that will support the plant with moisture it requires. You can then move it to brighter light."

I agree partly with this. Ok, well that might work but it can be much easier. All you really have to do it put it in a small 3" pot and mist down the soil everyday, but not to wet because it can kill the plant. Just enough to put water up the stem. Also, make sure there is no leaves near the soil so they don't end up taking up all the water. Hope this helps.

No, lets say you have a 3" cutting, you should have it with an 1" under soil and 2" above the soil. Before the roots come out it will make a root ball and will look like there is a ball at the end of it. Then roots will come out of it.

Lastly, near the start you said cut one stem into 3 pieces. I Don't see how this works :S All I did was cut one of the stems off from the main stem and potted it. I done two, they both have roots but have hardly grown if grown at all I can't really tell.
