How to Build Cheap and Customizable Cages

UPDATE: Turns out I won't be using this cage after all :( And after all that work too... It just wouldn't stay stable enough with the door plan I was using.

So, I shall just use 1x1 wood that I already have laying around and a good latex-based paint to seal it and build a nice wood/screen cage. Probably what I should have done in the first place, but I at least had to try the panel idea. Would have worked, too, if not for the door thing and finding a way to attach the screen that didn't involve hundreds of tiny zip ties (drove me nuts, so I scrapped the cage).

I shall have pictures of the new cage ASAP. Shouldn't take me long to build since I'm much faster with wood. :)

If you're willing to have a wire cage, rather than screen mesh, consider a big bird cage. I've used them in the past, before started making my wood cages. If you watch sales, you can get bird cages very reasonably. I paid something like $40 for a cage intended for a small parrot, 2' x2' x 3.5' with a stand. Nice coated wire so no risk of toe/claw injury as there is with those screen cages, sturdy, easy to attach branches and feeding cups so, etc.

Would a dog cage work? I can get a used one cheap that measures
22"Lx13"x16"H. I was thinking of standing it up with the door in top. Then wrap it in fiber mesh screen I have.

I don't see why not as long as the mesh isn't big enough for your critter to crawl through. It would be pretty important to make sure they will cup feed or you will have feeders all over the house!
