Just curious about how you guys pronounce all the chameleons names? Such as:

Veiled: Vay-ld
Nosey Be : No-zee Bee

I'm not sure about some of the other names but that's just to get started off, and I know that some people from different areas may differ on this but I'll leave that up to you guys :D

From what I understand, there is no "E" sound in the Madagascan language. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Nosy be = no-say bay

Ambilobe = am-bay-lo-bay

Something along those lines... :eek:

That may be correct. lol I actually heard someone pronounce them that way the other day and that's how he pronounced them.. so I was standing there talking to him all while thinking "have I been pronouncing them wrong all along?!:eek: " lol

I say veiled like you would say a wedding veil, with an -ed at the end.

I think the last time someone made a thread about this Trace mentioned that as far as she knew, due to the island's French presence that these words have some French influence. Which validates how I pronounce the names coming from similar romance languages; so Nosy Be is Noh-see Beh (even though I say Nosee Bay for my American friends ;) ), for example. My father, who spent his younger years filming documentaries in Madagascar as a young man,says I'm right so that has to count for something, right? lol

Jann would probably know, she was just in Madagascar this past Fall. I'm sure she brushed up on her Malagasy!

What an interesting thread. There are quite a few pronunciations I've wondered about but was too afraid to ask. Keep going and I will get all my answers.LOL:D

Lol Kate, I was kind of embarassed as well, but someone had to ask it. Don't want people walking around to go around saying "Am-bih-low-b" lol

Olimpia is correct.

Ambilobe = Am-bee-low-bay
Nosy Be = Naw-see Bay
Nosy Faly = Naw-see Fah-lee
Veiled = Vayld. I also see the word Veild all the time now and that spelling is not correct.

Most of the other Malagasy locales are easy to figure out and pronounce as are the common names of the more common species. The Latin name is a little trickier; are there some specific ones you are wondering about?

Parson's=Ex-pen-sive

Lol.

I wasn't looking for specific names, just a general thought idea of how to say their names, I figured since they were from other countries and such the spelling may not directly represent how to say it.

The Naw-See is gonna be tough to get used to saying. Just seems so wrong, but thats what I get for being American and from California :rolleyes: lol

sorry for the size, I'm about to leave work and wanted to get that in before I left :eek:

I hear people pronounce ambilobe as ahm bee low bay, with the stress on the second and last syllables, am BI lo BE, but I've heard it is really on the lo syllable, so that it comes out ambiLObe, Im not saying I'm right or anything, but when americans pronounce it they seem to want to pronounce the word as if it were two separate words like ambi-lobe.

Ooooo I forget that people go to the website I got the tapatalk app for my iPad its completely different thanks for showing me your thinking what is this guy even looking at hahah

talking to one of the well-known guys that deals with WC panthers on the phone, he pronounced Ambilobe as "ahm-bill-ibby" and it took a good 30 seconds to realize he meant the locale that we read/say as "ahm-bih-low-be". Assumed he was probably right since he presumably talks to exporters in Madagascar, but it was surprising/unexpected.

How do you folks pronounce "Mitsio"? "mitt-see-oh"?

I've been pronouncing like this:

Panther - pan-ther
Chameleon - ka-meel-le-on
Pygmy - pig-mee
Amphibole - eye-dont-hav-a-cloo

That's about it for my chameleon phonics.

BTW, my name is pronounced oddly due to my Irish-German-Spanish-Italian heritage:

JimO - bon-hed
