Do you keep any types that have to go into dormancy? I used to keep some pitchers that had to spend a few months in the fridge each year 😄
For sure. About 100 Venus Fly Traps, some temperate sundews/butterworts and countless pitcher plants are outside as we speak just coming out of dormancy; I counted about pitcher 40 blooms getting ready to pop. I'll send a pic when they peak.

It does not get very cold in Socal obviously but it is enough and with the shortened days it works leaving them outside.

I don't want to even think about having to refrigerate plants! I already have a full fridge for all the animal stuff (food, vitamins etc.) plus the little 60 degree one for bugs!

PS the bonus with CP is that they love dead bugs so feeders never go to waste!

Wow.... 😳

I'm feeling overwhelmed with:
1 veiled chameleon
1 cat
1 Molly
2 danios
I have no idea how you all do this!

I gotta ask... Do you all have children? My animals are my babies for now, and they take up most of my free time.
I have a pretty self-sufficient adult stepdaughter and work only 3 long days a week. My animals are my ‘children’ and are what keep me occupied.

Only ones with fur, feathers or scales-by choice. The great thing is that animals can go into their cages, cat in her bed, and can actually have a bath in peace. Not so with kids! Those are the really amazing people.

I think the key is you have to actually LIKE cleaning cages, I can't relax until everybody is spotless. I think we are all a little insane.

My cat follows me like a puppy. 😆 She doesn't let me do anything alone!

Great question for us....
I have 2 boys that are in their 30's
1 is actually an exotic animal trainer getting ready to work for the new Houston Aquarium and Exotic animal park ( I think that's the place).
He is always showing me pictures with Dolphins, sloths, eagles, snakes, rhinos, etc....... I think he is rubbing it in my face, since I just have the ones that are State legal or easy to get.
The other is retiring from Army soon.
Quick story--- When he was 10 and I worked in a pet shop (Memphis, TN. the owners let me run 100% and bring my interests). I was sharing with a group of 1st graders before the door opened. He took a baby alligator out of my hands and just started going over all the pro and cons along with behavior and maintenance. I was like "what the heck" since I loved doing it. Then was extremely proud with his attitude which changed at 19 and was semi kicked from the nest. Ha ha

Thanks for letting me share- Couple Old Pics... It has always been in my blood

1. Son and baby opossum TX 1999 We would go grocery shopping like this and most never even knew it was real. ha ha
2. My first speckled caiman IL in 1979
3. Incubator for chicken eggs IL 1975 My first library (yes) book I ever read was "How to raise chickens" so used their fish tank incubator.
4. Wiggles and Wags TX. 1999
5. Hanging with the Burmese with the kiddos. Camp Pen. CA 1997
Not pictured - ducks, ferret, hedgehogs-garter snakes-salamanders- bark scorpion- (I did get fined for raising poultry within Chicago city limits) 10 dollars back in the day.

Never shared before!!! Few are Polaroid---Few are 110 and a flip phone. ha ha

We range from Chinchillas to bearded dragons. There are at least 3 distinct climate zones. I loose track of full count. so lets see
Chinchilla 1
Bearded Dragon 1
Chameleons 2 Permanente 6 young.
Honduran milk snake 2
corn snake 2
Kenyan sand boa 1
Jungle carpet python 1
Gouldian finches 4
owl finches 2
canary 1
green cheek conure 1
Macaw 1
Chickens 6
So I guess 31 animals, 13 species plus 2 roach colonies and crickets.
I am defiantly an addict. lol I look at homes like "where do I put the animals?"

I always wanted a bird, but are you ever able to leave your house with them? As in, go on vacation. Not like walk around with the bird(though I've seen people do this lol)

And I love your animals btw!

If you train a bird yes. I have known many that free flight their birds. I got my Macaw when I was 17. It was 35 years ago and the care was different aka wrong. The word at the time was if you don't clip their wings you will lose your bird. So that is what I did. I regret it. It know makes as much sense as cutting of a dogs front legs so it doesn't run away. That said they are smart and can easily be trained.
Now the harsh truth. I have denied being a bird person for many years. They are loud, messy, and no they can not really go more than a day without direct care. Some smaller birds can starve to death in 24 hours.
That is why I am more of a reptile person, at least that is what I keep telling myself. I really love the birds.

Yes!!! I have a 1 yr old and an 8 yr old, my husband and I are both active duty military, so moving with our reptiles/fish/amphibians is always fun. Life is crazy 🤪🤪

I've thought so much about parrots... I just can't seem to do it. My mother had a bird obsession growing up and we constantly had like over 30 birds. I hated it. Lol. They were so messy and loud and some were really mean. Hahaha. I think because of that I wouldn't get a bird. Can't do destructive animals, which I know with the proper care they aren't bad.

Thank you for the info, very interesting. I've seen macaws trained to do a lot of incredible things. We almost rescued an african grey a long time ago, but decided not because of how high maintenance they are.

OH I forgot to mention. DON'T GET A MACAW. If I knew then what I know now I would not have gotten him. This is a 2 year old on the spectrum for your entire life. This is more than most cat truly commit to. We cant predict our future. My entire life evolved around this bird. I have taken very few vacations over a couple of days, and in years where I did not have someone to trust I did not stay away from home more than over night. My rent has always cost more. I could not just rent a room and many roommates are not happy with the noise. It has been a burden as much as a joy. I am 51 now and could not imagine life without her. No home ever feels like home if she isn't there. I love her as a child. But it is a double edged sword.
If you wanted to start with a bird, I would recommend a green cheek conure. The have a normal 10-15 year life span and are only about the size of a cockatiel. The are adorable and like to cuddle and play. They think they are macaws, they have that big a personality.
