I knew this was going to happen.

Well when Picasso doesn't want to open his mouth he can really clamp down tight and Steve has to open it with the wooden q-tips if we are to give him anything to eat or drink, so today he was being stubborn and wouldn't open so with the q-tip being applied between his lips it slipped and cut his mouth, he ended up with a bloody lip, I know Steve didn't mean to do that, but it just really hurt me to see him hurt and bleeding, after all he has been through, I just wanted to cry for him....I just love that little guy more than I ever thought I could.

Awww, poor little guy, and poor you! :( Have you tried using a rubber spatula or a credit card to pry his mouth open? I used an old credit card to get Amy to open up for me when she was poorly. I know what you mean about loving them more than you ever dreamed possible.

I dont know if this will work for you , but it worked for me with Gail, I use one of those cuticle pushers - I was to scared to cut her mouth w/ a credit card- plus I did not have much room to get a crix in w/ the card in the way - the cuticle pusher is a hard rubber on one end, and for me, it fit right in and then acted like a wedge plus you have almost the whole mouth opening to aim for- it looked like this on pretty much- I dont have mine anymore, I threw it away after she passed because I was not sure it could be properly cleaned, but they dont cost much - maybe give one a try ? sorry your little guy got a hurt lip- but I am so happy he is strong enough to fight w/ you - lol ;) I still think of the pics you put up a bit ago of him strutting down your hall - makes me smile :)

Thank you, that sounds like something better than that wooden q-tip, they are very easy to love!

Cheryl, I will get one of those tomorrow when I go to Walmart, we do have to get his mouth open pretty wide for those larger crickets...every time he walks down the hall now, it makes me just warm up all over, he looks so cute and healthy now.....Thanks.

Bless him! You guys are such good caretakers of Picasso!!
Thank you Cammie, I love that boy!

Poor little boy. I am sorry to hear that. I have had to give allot of meds and do some force feeding over the years and I have never had to use anything to pry the mouth open. If I'm giving meds or food by myself (which is allot) I lay out a towel or paper towel on the counter and put the Cham on the towel. I gently pull down on the chin with one hand as I hold the Cham still with the other as the mouth open I use the left hand to hold the mouth open with my fingers and use my right hand (the one I used to pull down on the chin) to give the meds or insect or both. This has always worked quite well for me. IF my husband is home instead of laying them on the counter one of us will hold the Cham while the other pulls down on the chin with one hand and holds the mouth open with the other and then stick in the meds/food with the same had that was used to gently pull down on the chin. I hope this helps.

Thank you Jann, if anybody knows how to do it, then that would be you.....I will try that tomorrow or let Steve try it first,I will do anything to keep from hurting that boy any more than he has been so far in his short little life.
