First off I want to say thanks to everyone whose posts I read when we got our vailed. What a great site and what excellent information on care, equipment, and feeding I have gotten from here. Also, what an excellent idea the DIY-Cricket Cup made by eat2muchrice is. I will be making one soon.
A client of my wife, didn’t want her chameleon any longer so we took her. She is supposed to be about a year old and seems to be in great health. After reading about enclosures, I purchased a Reptibreeze 2x2x4 screened enclosure and moved her out of the fish tank she came with. I cut and dried, on my wood stove, some old Concord grape vines and used them as the framework for the fake vines. I am currently working on a wooden canopy to mount the lighting into and also have a place to attach the strip power cord to, so that it will be up above the MistKing misting nozzles. I also covered the back of the enclosure with a 2x4 sheet of vinyl fish tank backer. I did this to prevent the water from the MistKing nozzles from getting all over the wall and giving an astatically pleasing backing.
Since my vailed loves to eat kale, I have been putting small pieces on the branches. The problem is when I put several pieces on the branch and she eats some or walks by the pieces fall off the branches fall the bottom of the enclosure. So I decided to make a little tray to put the kale on. I wanted it to blend in with the environment, so I used a piece of coconut shell. I drilled several holes in the bottom and 2 more on the side to screw it to a grape vine. So far it has worked awesome. When the mist system is on, a little water collects and then it just drips out and the kale is left still in the coconut shell. The best part is that it doesn’t stick out like a plastic cup would.
The next thing is to get a Pothos started from one of my wife’s plants and plant it in a pot at the bottom of the enclosure to help with keeping humidity up. Unfortunately my house is very dry; around 34%. I will also check my local Lowes hardware to see if they have any Pothos. I also plan on removing the sub-straight and doing something else.
SO, now I have a question or two. I am a little confused about dusting my crickets. Right now, I dust my crickets every day with a calcium powder with vitamin D3. I have read that I should only dust with calcium 2 times a week and without vitamin D3 and vitamin D3 should only be used a few times a month. Can someone please clarify for me a proper regimen for dusting crickets? What vitamins should be used and how often? How often should I feed mealworms?
Please comment on my setup if you will. I am always open to suggestions to make my set up more conducive to my chameleon’s needs. I will post some photos when I figure out how to do so.
