Is it normal for my Chameleon to hate me?

I got her ten days ago and she runs like she is running from the cope every time I get near the cage! She never let's me see her eat, hides all the time, she thinks I suck :-(

All chams have different attitudes/personalities. like dogs or cats. But i would suggest letting your cham see that your hand is what brings food. Really, this works. They will learn to associate your hand, and eventually you, with good things. patience, repetition wins.

It is natural for the chameleons to be very scared of their new environment the first month or so. :) Don't be worried.

Assuming you got her ten days ago, it may take another week or so for her to not be so scared.

Also when she stops showing signs of running away and being scared (if she develops pale colors and bright/dark spots that means she's scared/stressed) try hand feeding her. This will allow her to "like" you more and be used to you, and she will also start to associate you with food -- a good thing -- and tolerate you being around. Maybe she will even let you hold her if you work slowly at it.

Just have patience. :)

I would just give her time. I try and wait atleast a couple of weeks to let them settle in and then try approaching. If she is biting then she is really feeling threatened.

Ill post a pic for you guys ... From a distance. The other thing is she shed the second day after I got her, that could not have been fun for her.

The two veileds that I have think I am wonderful, though.

Just give it time. Think of it like this, lets say you move to another state, you know no one, or nothing about the area and you are just thrown into school with a bunch of random kids. Its difficult and you feel stressed and don't know what do. Just give space for a week or two and then start to make attempts and hand feed and things like that. All about adjusting.

Here pretty girl, I'm the ice cream man!! CHOMP!

yea you are definitely the cham equiv of the dude with candy in a van right now lol. Holding your cham should be the last thing you are worried about right now. Post your chams vital stats as well so we can get an idea... age type etc? pictures are also good. Focus on things you can do with you cham that make you nonthreatening. Is the enclosure at eye level with space for the cham to be above you? What kind of enclosure / feeding system are you using? All these things can help fuel a more targeted response. (I think there is an actual form in cham health if your cham has a health issue that you can fill out).

Look forward to hearing more.

Everything everyone else said! One thing that seems to work best besides just giving them time to adjust is find there most favorite food and only offer it by hand. One of my females was the same but she can't resist meal worms so that is how I got her to chill and now although she does not just jump out on my hand she will come for her Cham crack (mealworms ) :D (I know it's devious isn't it!!! ) but it works. Lol

It's taken almost a year for my girl to warm up to me a little! Is she a veiled? If so then yes it's normal and get used to it :D

But seriously it might take a long time of building up trust but once they finally settle they are the sweetest little creatures ever!

Like angiel said it can def take some time.. my male veiled finally eats out of my hand and chills out a bit and ive had him for 6 months now. I personally think it took longer cuz I was pulling him out when I first got him. (Pissed off) haha

Only 10 days!!??
That's nothing, he may not be used to you and his new surroundings for weeks, or even months!!

It's takes lots of time, and the patience of a Saint to get them tame enough to handle.
You need to at least get him to eat from your hand before you can expect him to climb on you.

Check out my blog; taming chameleons :)

what bunny said..
and even then she might not like you ha. My female tolerates me and my veiled male doesn't trust me at all, no matter what I do:)

dont belive in taming chams, ive have some that are nice an some that arnt, its just the way it goes. i find the nasty ones get worse as they get older the more you try the worse they get

Thank you everyone for the replies. The common theme is patience and acceptance. She is only 3 mos. old. A sambava panther ... Ill post a couple pics soon.

I also have two Veileds who are much different temperaments - got all three the same day. The veileds like me will not run from me, wont eat from my Hand yet, but much more tolerant.

Enclosures are all 2x2x4 - the enclosures are massive compared to the animals which are 3 or 4 " without tail.
