Is this a bad idea?

My boss at the pet store I work at is not business savvy in the least. It is incredibly frustrating, but I have learned to just let it go. However, today she had a new, what I think, ridiculous idea, and was just wondering if anyone else agrees.

She wants to buy a male and female Nosy Be (or as she said, "the pretty blue ones") and breed them, then sell the babies at incredibly low price. Like, 80-100 dollars. Should I just let her go on with it as long as the chams are not mistreated? She would never intentionally hurt an animal, but she is a bit air-headed and naive, and I'm honestly just not sure of what to do.

HHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM? I dont know? its a hard one
She seems a little phsyco. If you take really good care of them it may work. Tell ur phsyco boss to do her research. LOL:confused:

Just do research first, and don't screw up. My biggest worry is the idea that you're selling chams to make cheap, quick profit. when what you don't realize is the food, time, effort and money required to keep them until they are sellable. Next please think about the fact that you wouldn't want to just sell them to anyone who walks in the door. as that will likely kill off plenty of chams. Some animals are priced highly so amateur handlers cannot get them easily and so it puts some weight on the animal such as not letting X amount of dollars die off.

Sorry to be so negative about it but its a serious thing that you must consider.
I believe there is a wonderful article on here somewhere about things to consider before breeding. Hope this helps.

Well, if we were to do this, I'm not worried about how they will be taken care of since it would be me doing it, and I wouldn't let her sell the babies until they were old enough. Also, we already occasionally breed the Veiled Chams that we have, but we only do it like, once a year, and now that the guy that usually does it has left, I will probably take over for that as well. What I am worried about is what you said about selling them cheap to people that just want a cool looking animal and won't take the time to learn about them.

Also what you said about the food and how much money it will take to raise them to that point, we are going to be losing so much money if she ends up pricing them that cheap. It's just not worth it.

Glad i could help you. As with 90% haha yes thats a random number, but as with most breeding projects, the costs outweigh the profits.

I agree - you could probably sell a majority of the clutch to forum members, but then again that might just entice her to breed them again, and that clutch might not be so lucky!

lol why not ...at least you are there and you can correct her if she does something wrong ! just try it and see how it goes, if its working properly do it again and so on !

Does she know how long it takes until babies are viable to sell? and all the food and care it takes to get them to that point?

Yes she does. We actually have some Veiled eggs right now that a female laid a few months ago.

I would love to sell them to the forum members because I know you all would give them an amazing home, so I will talk to her and see what she says.

I also should have mentioned sooner that she probably won't buy the chams until the end of summer. This won't happen anytime soon, but I will let you all know when it does.

I'm sure you could sell them to forum member. There is a pet store near Tampa that advertises on Kingsnake and is sometimes at the local reptile shows that will ship. I almost bought a panther from them but at the last minute a different opportunity came up that I went for instead. But they were more than happy to advertise online and ship to whomever, they didn't have to sell to local people. I'm sure your boss wouldn't object to shipping if the buyer covers the cost.

Why is she selling them so cheap? Is it just so they arent there long? Let me know when she does this, I'll buy one for sure.

If this is successful let me know I'll buy one.
Just make sure research is done and they are cared for correctly.
If not intervene.
