Jackson's Chameleon

Your starting out very well with buying that medium 13 piece set, youll also need supplements,i scimmed through this so i dont know if anyone else put that on here.

can you put down a 'down payment' on her so that if she has the babies they are already yours?

not to be negative but the babies are going to cost some $ to raise - and you will need cages/food/lights/hoods as soon as they are born - you need to be ready for them!

I can't buy her without taking her home, I already asked. I am working on the supplies now...I think I am going to try the milk jug method for the babies. Can I get like a 48" reptisun 5 and put it over all of them?

im not sure about the mass produced method of raising babies - i raised all of mine in aluminum cages w/seperate lights etc. it worked out very well - 100% success rate but it was very expensive and i will NEVER purposly breed chams.

You bet! Milk jugs, kritter keepers and rubbermaid bins are good, inexpensive caging for montane babies.

I know I've had more success in raising montane babies singly or in pairs than I have when raised them as a group. Other keepers have noted this as well. Just remember to keep the humidity high and the temperatures low on the babies as they are very delicate.

She rarely moves, I've been told she eats her crickets at night so I guess she moves then, but she stays in the same place during the day.

Seems like a no-brainer but since no one has mentioned it as a possibility and I know how those big multi-unit cage setups Petco uses are....are they turning her light off at night or is it on 24/7?

I'm pretty sure they get turned off at night, but I'm not positive. I will find out tomorrow.

Would the 38 gallon reptarium be too small for her? I'll probably get the 65 gallonl, but I was just wondering because of space issues. Do reptile expos usually have good deals on supplies? FL chams is going to be there so if I haven't already purchased her cage I may get one from them if they are selling any.

I think a 38gal would be fine. That size isn't huge but does provide ample space for a xanth and more importantly you can create a good temperature gradient within.

Expos are an excellent place to get deals on supplies. You can also get the fluorescent hoods, clamp lamps, thermometers/hygrometers and spray bottles considerably cheaper at Lowe's or Home Depot than at a pet shop. Don't skimp on the UV tube (Get the Reptisun 5.0 at a show or shop) but you can use a regular house hold incandescent bulb as your heat lamp. Not all your equipment has to have Zoomed or another name brand printed on it for it to work with your chameleon.

The 13 item setup includes Minerall-O, Rep-Cal w/D3 and Rep-Cal Herptivite. I think that this setup sounds ideal for a first-timer, since it includes all of the crucial items a chameleon would need.

She looks young and if she is gravid at a young age that can be rough on her. I just went through the whole thing. I bought a Gravid jackson from a petsmart. I fed her as well as i could have with the right supplement and good variety of food crickets being base, and she still came down with MBD. My guess is she wasnt well fed before she was gravid, and she was to young to have babies.

She had 18 babies. I raised them and had 50% success. But i do want to worn you that raising the babies is a big job, i spend about 16$ a week on crickets. And more on top of that for fruit flies, and silkies. And this is at 3 months old.

Hope this gives you a little more info on the subject, if you have anymore questions you would like to ask me feel free.

Sorry I didn't keep you all updated! Unfortunately she died at the store before she gave birth and before I could take her :( I was pretty upset and stopped reading the forum. I'm back now though and contemplating getting a panther cham from a member of the this forum whom I met at work today.

I am so sorry. It is rough when they are ill and gravid. Best of luck with your new baby.

Disarray - wish you and I had met earlier - I would have been more than willing to help with the Jackson female. Anyway, if you should get anymore in at Petco, and need any advise, please let me know. I will help anyway that I can.

Thanks bocajan and reptimom. Kiwi was from a different Petco that I worked at. I am the reptile specialist down here and I won't be ordering any cham's simply because we do not have the ability to properly care for them at the store. It's also a college town and though I am a college student myself, I don't trust my fellow students enough to sell them a chameleon unless they have done their research. And since I cannot be at work all the time, another employee might not be as careful. We get a lot of people that want to keep hamsters in cricket keepers and turtles in 10g aquariums...
