Jacksons STILL Gaping

Okay so despite my efforts to lower the basking temp, increasing ventilation by getting a much larger screen cage, and making sure he's getting the right supplements and good water, my Jax is STILL gaping his mouth. Even at night when the heat lamps are off. There is no residue or excess saliva, he is just opening his mouth. Can someone please help me/explain this to me???

You've done everything that can be tried. I think at this point, you should take him to a vet with a suspected respiratory infection. If he is breathing at night with an open mouth, that is what I would suspect. He may not have the classic signs, but something is obviously wrong.

Okay, I will schedule a visit. Thank you for your help. What is the best way to transport them to the vet? The least stressful way?

I use a device called the "Chamousine"... It's a bucket with a towel on the bottom. Easy peasy, cheap, and secure. :). Keep us posted on his condition. I hope you're able to figure this out.

Can you post a close up shot of the mouth?
What foods have you been feeding him?

I had a Flap Jack (fuelleborni) in 94 whom could not close its mouth due to part of a snail shell. I thought it was from over heating but once I checked with mag-glass saw the little (tiny) irritant and that was the end of problem.

If you can get you ear up close to him when he is gaping, can you hear any wheezing or unusual sounds?

All of my montanes gape their mouth sometimes, though not at night and
they tend to close it when they see me, I know they did not have respitory
problems, and they all do it from time to time, though not excessive.

I used to think they were too hot, but that was not the case with me.
Although, all chams will gape and pant if they are too hot, so it's possible.
All my guyz gape when they are outside in the summer, even if they are in the shade.

I don't know why they do it, but it does not always mean that they have RI.

If excessive, and doing it at night, or you hear wheezing, gurgling or od sounds, you need to take him to a vet.
