hey everbody!!:D:D
so i went to my local pet store today for some crickets for my vield and i was told some jacksons arrived this morning, i checked them out and they we soo koool!! so i decided to perchase one male and one female to later breed them when they are 9 months to a year old, i did alot of research on how to take care of them, breeding, ect. so i am well informed and i am willing to give it a try and posibly market them :). this is my second time buying chameleons, i have a male vield that will be 2 years in april. so i asked how old they were and they told me they had no idea, there was 2 males and 2 females, they looked all to be aound the same age just based on there size. so my question is can anybody give me a estimate how old they are based on these pictures i took?? i read that they start to get there color around 4-5 months old, but to me they dont look 4 or 5 months old beacause of how big they are. i guessed they would be around 3 months old but thats just a guess witch is why i came here hopefully someone can correct me and give me a better estimate just based on these pics. i couldnt mesure them because i cant find a ruler anywhere in my house!!
sorry!!

Well they appear to be of age, or close to. They are way older than 4-5 months I can say that for sure. Best to wait about six months to be sure. Also before you keep them with your other cham, your probably going to want to quarantine them, vand have their fecals checked for parasites. Reason being they are most likely wild caught, and likely to have parasites. Did they say whether they were CB OR WC?

Welcome to CF!
Good to have you.
9-13 months IMO
They look the same age. How sure are you they arent related?
They do look very healthy.
To healthy to be WC?
Possibly meaning high chance of relation.

thanks for the welcoming :) . they are CB. and im not for sure if there realted but most lickly are because they said they all came from the same breeder, i didnt really pay attention to that subject when i bought them, is that bad that there related n too breed
?

You really dont wanna inner breed, that's not responsible breeding (would you sleep with your sister) :(... I would suspect they are in fact related comparing their size and the fact they came from the same breeder. JMO

i would never sleep with a sibling and i do understand what you are saying. i dont want to sound like i dont care if there brother n sister but if they dont accually know that there brother and sister like we do whats so bad about breeding brother and sister?? besides the fact that its not a good idea to breed brother and sister is there any harm that could happen to the babies or the female perhaps? would they be any different from other jacksons that have parents that arnt related??

My puppy, who I later found out came from a puppy mill and is inner bred, suffers because of that breeding. She has skin issues, digestive tract issues, and is honestly not very bright. The vet says that these issues were caused because of her poor breeding. Breeding a sister and brother together would probably harm the babies. I'm not one hundred percent positive on that, just have seen personally what it does to other animals.

ohh i see, so your puppy has those defects because she is inner bred? and by poor breeding you mean the previous owner of puppy poorly took care of her? so what is the main reason that your puppy came out like that? because of the inner breeding or because her prevous owner poorly took care of her?

Any time you interbreed, you are weakening the gene pool and may be looking at abnormalities. I just wouldn't do it. Trade chams with someone here on the forum to be safe. jmo

It really depends on whether they are from the same parents or more distantly related. It can be okay for cousins to breed.

However, due to the circumstances, I think you have to assume they are from the same parents so breeding them is not the best plan.

Noting that this is all about statistics so if they've already bred, there's a chance you'll have some good, viable babies.

If they haven't...well, I guess I wouldn't let them. It's always best to go with the higher probability of success and that means mixing bloodlines.

semi-experienced Jackson owner here...I'd say they were somewhere between a year and 15 months. Which means yes they are of age to breed, but I'd try to do some deep digging on their origin. Best bet would be to find someone trustworthy here on the forums willing to bring their male over to have a "breeding day" :)

Inbreeding means the parents were related genetically. It has nothing at all to do with a previous owner taking care of them (what they ate, how they were trained, etc.). It's a genetic thing that can cause health problems because breeding with relatives is not supposed to happen. It weakens the genetic pool and is bad for the population.

Some facts about inbreeding

In breeding can lead to abnormalities. Think birth defects in people babies or the babies may be too weak to make it.

Inbreeding can cause all sorts of issues.
Sterility in babies, deformations, ect...
You should only breed them if your sure they arent related. It sounds like you need to assume they are.
If your going to take the time to breed and care for babies, might as well do it right. ;)

Congratulations on your new chams. I have never studied the effects of cross breeding sibling chameleons or people for that matter. I do know that there is a chance of genetic defects in the offspring. I am pretty sure that the closer the relation between the two the higher the possibility is that there will be defects. They could even be severe. Try googling affects of inbreeding and see what pops up. You might be surprised.

She has the problems because her parents were So closely related.
