Is it just me or does anyone else find it funny that a repti sun t5 HO fixture comes with a normal t5 non HO bulb "free"...

after reading the long post on lighting, I have to say I am very discouraged.

apparently I need to rent the sun from Jesus at a premium to properly light my new enclosure.

33 wide 48 tall 24 deep.. some time excessive research is just that... excessive, and now my brain is like mashed potatoes.

I dont own a chameleon yet, I want to get everything perfect before I even consider ordering one. Live plants, mist king, repti fogger, custom built enclosure.

anyone wanna sell any t5 HO fixtures? i would love that =\

I am not knocking ho fixtures but IMHO you get a lot more cluck for the buck using a 48 inch shop fixture $10 bucks,48 inch 10.0 reptisun $28 bucks and a ceramic heat fixture $15-20 bucks with a 60 watt halogen bulb $6 bucks, add a 6500 plant light and you have more then enough light for up to 48 inch wide cage at a fraction of the cost. I got everything at a lowes except for the 48 inch reptisun bulb. Check out LLLreptiles as they have everything except for the shop light and the 6500 plant light. Just a thought but many breeders and keepers on this forum are doing exactly that!!!

thanks!

Thanks so much.. after getting off of the research train and just watching a couple videos on simpler setups, I am feeling much better.

I am going to take that advice i think ,I see the 48" bulbs are $20 on LLL and I can get a ballast with your advice as well.

Sent a message to lightyourreptiles but it is kinda late so ill check in the morning 8) thanks again

HINT:
You could check your local Craigs list for used HO t5 fixtures.

Many saltwater hobbyists are selling them to up grade to LED lights.

And Craigs list is a good place to look.

But buyer beware,
salt spray and salt creep can corrode fixtures.
So what seems like a good deal on a used saltwater HO t5 fixture could end up being a salt en-crusted clunker in the end.

And also ...
not all ballasts are created equal.
Here is an example:

The newer HO t5 DeepBlue fixtures can have woefully under-powered ballast.

About 9 mo. ago I had the opportunity to test some brand new Deep Blue HO fixtures.
The three I had tested all showed the same thing.
The ho t5 bulbs were running with a reading of almost half of what one would expect for the normal UV put-put levels.

But them again, you never know, TZAP13....you might get lucky and find something real good.

It never hurts to look around.

Best of luck!:D

not listed that way

Uhhh my 24" reptisun fixture from LLL came with a reptisun 5.0 T5HO.

Straight from their site:

Zoo Med 24" T5 High Output Terrarium Hood
size: 24" Hood holds the Zoo Med 22" T5 Bulb

**COMES WITH A FREE T-5 Repti Sun 5.0 Bulb for a limited time** New low profile design. Energy efficient T5 high output ballast for rapid start and maximum performance. Highly polished reflector for efficiency.

every website I checked has the same thing, you sure yours is a HO?

Yeah I'm sure. I checked the box and the specs on the bulb. I know HO's have a higher wattage too so I don't even think you can use a regular T5 bulb w/ an HO ballast.
