LED bulb for heat lamp

You can buy T5 HO Arcadias from www.lightyourreptiles.com
I actually just switched to the Arcadias from LYR. I bought the dual fixture with one 6500k and one uvb lamp. I couldn't be more pleased with the quality. The Arcadias appear to have a much better CRI, so the enclosure really "pops". The amount and quality of light is incredible. I have a really large enclosure, and the difference is amazing. I do still use a standard incandescent in a dome for basking - 75w most of the year, but during the coldest months, I may need to bump up to a 100w.

So I tested the LED bulbs and they bring my temperature to a 86 for my veiled chameleon (1 year old). I know that this is too little but I've switched to a 60 watt house bulb and it just makes my temps too high ( 150+). I've also tried lowering the basking but still is around 100. I've used a 40 Watt before and that was the first one that broke.

I use a 1200 lums 5000kv LED bulb in a 12 inch dome, which keeps the entire upper portion (10 inches) of my cage in the low 80’s. Then my chameleon has 2 main basking areas, 5 inches away from the UVB at 85 degrees and 3 inches from a side mounted inferred bulb at 90-95 degrees. Because the LED bulb creates the main surrounding heat I can lower the wattage of the inferred bulb by 1/3 power.

You need to wire in a dimmer so you can use your 60 watt and just dim it slightly until you like it. I put dimmers ahead of a power strip to control whole banks of incandescent bulbs. One dimmer for dozens of lights, just don't exceed the dimmer rating.

Careful with them in a dome, the heatsink can get hot and shorten the bulb life. Since they are a spotlight design already, no dome is needed to direct the light.

10 year warranty and 20 year lifespan, not worried. The large dome allows for wider heat and light dispution, keeping cooler than a normal fixture would. Mine is also not a spotlight design, not sure if the inside is corn shape or they use reflectors, but it produces 360 coverage.
