Let down.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but I posted here a while back about getting a veiled. Well, I had the enclosure set up, 48 gallon, live plants, a tank full of crickets ready to go. I went up to the pet store that was holding my chameleon for me, and they had SOLD it. They had it marked on hold for me, they knew I was getting the tank set up, but they SOLD MY CHAMELEON. I was pretty upset. They said they'd order me a new one in for the discounted price of $110, but I'm skeptical. I'm kindof hoping they let me down again so I can have a chance to buy a lovely baby from one of you fine gentlemen here on the forum lol.

Well, right now I just have a toy chameleon posing in the setup.

Sounds like the folks at your local pet store are less than honourable. Rather sad....

If you mention what city you live in , I'm sure someone here can direct you to a reputable and trustworthy breeder, close by.

If you are willing to pay 110.00 then I would think there are plenty of breeders on her who could sell you a very healthy veiled for that amount shipped. You really don't know what you will get from a pet store chain.

BTW: I'm sad you didn't get him, but that picture was soo cute!

The breeders on this site have BEAUTIFUL chams. And the support they will give you would far exceed the petstore. It looks like the base of your one plant has exposed dirt, leaves, twigs, etc. You may want to cover that area with river rock or something. The beanie baby shocked my husband, who for a brief second thought it was real!

You know, although I know it must have hurt badly, when they sold that chameleon out from under you they may have been doing you a favor... just a thought.

Oh hmm... I guess your right. I lined the bottom with carpet because I heard wood chips could cause impaction, but I didn't even think about the soil in the plants! Oh well, plenty of time to prepare.

Just between us, I suddenly realized I have the wrong temperature bulb, too. 75 is meant to be the temperature of the ROOM, but I thought it was for the bulb! Heh... Never let me tell you I'm not ditzy.

For that amount, I'd call a breader. I know the Kammers would be able to help you out and with them or another top breader, your pretty much guaranteed a top shelf animal.

Well, a screen cage would be more durable...

Otherwise everything seems like it would work
Except, I would 2nd some type of river rock (small) in the pots
and a plastic drip tray under the plants to prevent leaks and the crickets
from digging into the soil and making themselves a safe home.

You'll want to give him/her a few vines around 6" away from the heat & UV source for the cham to rest on.
Depending upon their preference, they may like to hang out at the bottom
or at the top of the cage.
The lams will burn the plant so you'll want to string the fake vines up and around there.

I think that you should really be wary of that store. Sounds like some shady buisness... No respect, just trying to make a few quick bucks. Ask why they sold the chameleon. I'm curious for their response, it should really sum up who they are....

Anyways, don't let that stop you from getting a chameleon. There are lots of great breeders out there with some great chams you could get!

Well apparently soemone came in and got a nice $400 setup, but it's the principle. i'm happy that it sounds like the chameleon got a good home after all, but they promised to hold the damn thing for me while I get set up.

and I do have a vine and plastic liner, it just might be hard to see... probably need to move the vine up a bit anyway though.

Well those types of places buy their animals from bulk dealers off a list. The people that generally buy their pets from those types of places are more concerned with the name of the animal vs demanding something that's quality. the stores are focused upon price and search out the cheapest things available without a care for the animal.

Yes, I can vouch. He is a handsome lad and REALLY FRIENDLY.

Yeah man, stay away from petstores when it comes to buying a cham. Most of the employees couldn't tell you the difference between a panther and a veiled cham.

I'm pretty lucky with the PetCo here. The people are knowledgable but they all breed chams and bearded dragons and pythons. So they know proper reptile care and what you need to keep them healthy. But they don't control where the chams come from or what shape they will be in.

Stick with a breeder.

Sorry to hear about that. My wife wanted to get a cham from a local pet store, so she could see it in person before we bought it. I tried and tried to tell the benefits from buying from a breeder online. Fianally I got threw to her. I think one of the most important things to me is, where the cham came from(bloodlines, ma and pa)You will not get that from Petsmart. Petsmart can not even setup and care for a cham properly.

Petsmart™ and PetCo™ have to be some of the worst imho.

I know from whom one is getting their bearded dragons these days.
To hear the stories about what they do to their suppliers is angering!
For example, I've been told that despite their employees poor and ignorant care
If any animal dies, they send it back to the breeder and demand credit for it.
This even includes cricket die off for their feeders!
that's why they're selling expensive small 30 count boxed crickets
that can't be counted for dead ones.
Their contract's fine print simply drives good people out of business.
if you provide a good animal, they kill it and then send you a bill.

I hope that Petco™ and Petsmart™ will die and go away really soon.
let people go back to the mom and pop's or buy over the internet.
that kind of "pet trade" has got to change.
I feel so sorry for those animals traded as commodities.

Thats why the reptile tradeshows are so very important.
people really should have to meet the ethical breeders and animals before purchase
and keep the bad people out of it.
