Hey does anyone have any idea of how the ban on incandescent bulbs is going to affect the reptile lighting industry? I see that incandescent bulbs are going to be phased out by the end of 2011 I think. Anyone know anything about how this will affect us?

WOw! So much for the land of the free! Just making us do what they want us to do, w/out any say! OOoooo! Thanks for clearing that up for me...

just the 100 watt by January. The other watts will follow will all of them being retired by 2014.

Yay government!!

taxation without representation?

Adults cannot choose to convert electricity which they pay for out of their own pockets into both heat and light at the same time because some know-it-alls-making-choices-for-free-men decide that would be wasteful. Or more truthfully lawmakers probably have someone lining their pockets from the alternative lighting industry so they feel just great forcing the rest of us to buy the products that pay for the stuff lining their pockets.

America used to be

the land of the free
the home of the brave
the land of liberty
pro-choice
a land where all men are created equal including lawmakers and citizens

I believe that there is an exemption for "special use bulbs". I suspect that means we will be able to buy "heat bulbs" for our reptiles. Of course, these will be significantly more expensive than the bulbs we now pick up at the grocery store.

we still have choice taken away from us. There are people that believe that they know whats best for us. thats where the problem lies.

come to think of it I wonder at what point we stopped calling these people our "representatives" and started calling them "lawmakers" LOL

Maybe around the same time we started calling our "public servants" "officials" instead. LOLOL

To stimulate LED development, the federal government has instituted a $10 million "L Prize" for an energy-efficient replacement for the 60-watt bulb. Philips is so far the only entrant in testing, and Eftekhar expects the company to win it soon. But Lighting Sciences Group plans its own entry, which it will demonstrate at the trade show

Nothing like a little motivation. :D

I dont use them. So I really doubt its going to be a big deal for me. Things change technology keeps on rolling.

there are other buld technologies that produce heat, ie, halogen, metal halyide ect i suspect we will just have to adapt.
with regards to a person chice i do agree we derve one, but on the other hand we will have to think of the positive, there is many people who just use chaep incondecant buld all throught their homes ect that are wasting energy, and sving energy helps the enviornment.
also as stated i believe their will still be special bulb exceptions, but yes at a higher cost

great point, maybe there is an oportuinity for someone to invent a needed product here ( new style basking bulbs )

It doesnt matter if you think its wasting energy. Its none of the governments business what i do with the electricity I pay for.

Helping the environment? thats the biggest load of crap the government puts out. It has nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with money.

yes at 50 dollars a pop. This is the government lining special interests pockets.

people in the country really need to wake up and stop taking crap from our elected officals.

oh the govt, has all kinds of rights to dictate what you do with power, but i do see your point.
as for the enviornment if all incondecant bulbs were replaced with energy efficient ones the srain on power systems would be less, causing less need for hard running poluting power plants..

so tell me while we replace all those nasty bulbs that makes power plants pollute. they want you to drive electric cars that will put way more strain on your power plants than a lightbulb

dont you see the hypocracisy?

yes i do, but to that i say the pollution that is required to charge a car is still less than the pollution caused by a fuel burning engine.

i do agree with you just pointing out the other side of the coin

To them yea its all about the money. But yes it is helping in reducing energy not like its much in comparison to what is still wasted anyways. Bottom line Federal GOVT. it is always about money. I do what I do and im pretty eco friendly but Im no sheep thats for sure.

The ban has been delayed in Canada, due to the uproar. People dont like change. :)

It was only the high watt bulbs that were to be effected anytime soon anyways. I imagine most people are using 40 and 60watt bulbs more than 100watt bulbs.

dont forget there are alternatives, such as halogen
and there will be exemptions for special uses, such as reptile bulbs.

You have a say...or rather the lobbyists hired by special interest groups have a say. Gov't officials don't just come up with this stuff on their own (it takes more brainpower than these figureheads usually have). They are convinced by others to carry an idea forward to law.

There are influential environmental lobbyists clamoring for incandescent bulb bans just as there are industry lobbyists clamoring for laws that favor bulb makers. Global climate change activists are hammering at Congress' door and reducing power plant emissions and loads are one way to get there. Panicking citizens are also screaming at their elected reps about their power bills too.

I have used cf bulbs in my home for years not just because they are more efficient, but because my local electric rates top $0.57 per KWH...why wouldn't I want bulbs that last many times longer and cost much less to burn than incandescents? If I need a basking bulb for a reptile I can always use a good bright fluorescent paired with a ceramic heat emitter!

Besides, if global climate change forces humans to rethink their entire lives the hobby of keeping chams won't really matter very much...choice will be taken away then too.
