Male or Female Ambanja?

Hello All,

I need help in sexing my Ambanja Chameleon, I bought her at the last Reptile Expo in July, and I am starting to think that this is a female. I really wanted a male since the colouring is so nice. Can you please help me out, I will post these pics and tell me what you think, I can add more if you need me to just let me know.

Thanks

Thanks for helping out those who posted, now to just find a male Ambanja, I know a place where I can get one, raise them both and breed them.

How many of you know about breeding Chams? I don't know anything about it, what age, when, what happens, is the male being too aggressive, incubation etc..

If anyone can send me some reference sheets or even help me out that would be cool. Making an incubator can be hard so if anyone know of an easy way that helps too. Misting the eggs what temps etc...

I know it is alot of work but I am up for the challenge I just want to do my research before so I know what I am getting myself into.

Thanks for everything people,

Anyone else care to take a look at the pics and tell me what my cham is that would be cool so far I have 2 saying female.

Shane

Just to add, I've seen this animal in person. I wouldn't consider myself any type of expert however, at this point i'm honestly stumped. I've been leaning toward female as well. Due to its colouration, that being said however, there is the presence of a small bump which could indicate a male. I suppose time will tell in the end. I say more pictures... everyone loves pictures.

Cheers,
Kosmo

Do you know the age? It can sometimes be very hard to tell at this point. Based on the pics I would say it could go either way... But I am leaning towards male, seems to be a devloping hemi bulge there.

I will add more pics, I took quite a few around that area so maybe more will help out.

As for age, I got it in July, so my guess is no older than 3 months. It was really tiny when I got it. I have a thread with posted pictures of how small it was just do a search on threads I have posted, the pics are on the 2nd page of the thread called Baby Chameleon Food. The cham was tiny, I am no expert either but my guess is that it was no older than 4 weeks out of the egg?

So my guessing 4 weeks, plus the 2 months I have had it...3 months.

I was also told that female Ambanja's have a red throat, well when this cham puffs it throat out it is red, I am not sure how accurate that red throat is an indication for a female.

Here are a few more photos.

Shane

It looks like a boy to me only because of the tiny bump behind the vent which may be the hemipenal bulge

Its kinda hard to see. I think I would point to male. If you could get some more pics I may be able to tell better. It was my first clutch that I posted and first time sexing so I am hoping I am right:eek: or I will be giving some refunds. Im 99 percent sure though. Here are a couple pics that show a good profile to tell. Its kinda hard when its under them to tell but the side view is a good profile.

Male without much of a bulge.

Hey all,

Here are some Side view pics that I took maybe now I can get it determined. The Cham itself is more of a brownish peachy orange colour, for some reason today it is really dark almost pissed off I guess. I thought males start taking on colour after 3 months? Anyways here are a few more photos.

I never any good in determining the sex at early age anyway.
All other pics make me think that it's a girl.

But, there is one pic that cast a doubt.
seems to be a slight bump after the vent.

Sorry that i made a mark on your pic.

It could be a female with a large vent,
or a male with tiny hemipenis.

I have to say that i am stump as well

AHHH MAN, I don't wanna have a male with a "teenie-weenie" LMAO. Poor guy (if it is male) is doomed lol.

It looks female to me. From what I've read, 3 months usually around the time they start showing signs of coloration. Some locales take longer.

HMMMMMMMM this is a hard one Shane! I am going to have to go with female. Only because of the peachish colors. It does look mad hahaha. That might be what is making it hard to because of the more profound bars. I probably wouldnt put my money on it but yeah female. Those are good pics of the vent. If you could get maybe 1 or 2 of her relaxed then it might give more of a clue. Sorry

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So many photo's. My cham has been like that all day, dark and pissy, I don't know why but maybe he/she was just in a mood, I will try to get a few of he/she relaxed but that will be tough...Kind or a spazz, always reaching for another branch or something lol but that is typical...I will try again tomorrow, my cham is in dream land right now.

Hey

I took your advice and tried what you said Chameleons Tree. I have an older male panther he is 3 but is a Maroansetra, it is the one in my avatar pic. I put the little one on my hand and showed it to him. He puffed right out and started head bobbing. Is this what you meant by twitching?

I know you are tired of taking pics. But if you can get a pic of "he" or "she" when it is relaxed, we should be able to figure it out. Instead of taking it out of the cage, I wuld just shoot a couple shots of it in it's cage.
It is sometimes hard to tell the difference between a stressed out female and a male at this age.
