! ! MBD ! ! Help

I'm not sure about all the different liquid calcium products and what they contain but I can't rave enough about calcium glubionate. I got it from the pet store I got Kermit from. They just had this just glass jar of it that was sold for infants. Its what they use on all their animals. Kermit really seemed to like the taste and even complete mouthfuls of the stuff on a daily basis seemed to have no negative side effects.

I'm not sure how it compares to calcium gluconate, which is a similar product sold for just about any calcium deficient animal (or human).

I'm guessing calcium shots are even better than the calcium liquid so I don't know if mixing the two would be over the top. But, if your cham isn't getting shots, I would most definitely recommend using one of the two liquids I mentioned above.

Check this link out - it is a calcium glubionate success story similar to mine. Looks like they did injections with calcium gluconate in addition, but for a shorter time.

Howdy,

It's non-prescription. It is available in some pharmacies. If they don't have it, they can usually order it very quickly.

thats great ill head out to pick some up, im just guessing but shouild i administer it in very small doses due to the fact i cannot calculate the exact dose due to his size ? also 1 or 2 times a day ?

Breakfast of champions  hes doing better it seems just after a couple of days. i know this is a long process but his whole attitude is different, over the past 2 days and it makes me feel like he just might pull through if i keep it up. :)

Howdy Jeremy,

Here's what is listed in Mader's med book:

Offical Medical Book Dose: 10mg/kg given orally evey 12 to 24 hours.
That means for every kilogram of chameleon weight, give 10mg of calcium glubionate for a chameleon with nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (in your case MBD).

What that works out to be is:

Calcionate Syrup (calcium glubionate)
5ml contains 115mg of calcium glubionate
Do the math and that means there is 10mg in 0.43ml of liquid.
So if 0.43ml of liquid is the dose for 1000 grams of chameleon weight and if, for example, your chameleon weighs 100 grams then 0.043ml is the dose. Round that up to 0.05ml of the liquid twice a day. By the way, I've seen some vets also prescribe it at 1ml/kg once a day instead of 0.43ml/kg twice a day.

Don't have a syringe? A single drop is pretty close to 0.05ml and you are not likely to have any adverse reaction to an overdose at this point if you happen to have an overly large droplet. By the day, a typical $20 bottle of Calcionate contains about 10,000 doses .

If any keeper (local pick-up only) ever needs some, I usually have plenty on hand for free :).

ok , the only thing i could find t the pet store is a liquid calcium suppliment manufactured by a company called Zilla it says it prevents MBD. we will see if it corrects MBD. ok like i said is is a liquid calcium suppliment and its ingrediance is as listed
water, calcium gluconate, calcium carbonate, calcium chloride, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and xanthan gum. my question is will this work for use as an oral liquid calcium ? ? ?

I know that calcium gluconate is similar to calcium glubionate. My guess is that calcium glubionate is slightly superior for some reason. But, I don't have any hard facts to back that up atm.

I would guess that what you got is probably going to be effective but, if I was you, I would try to find the glubionate.

Its marketed for babies and other animals as well, so don't limit yourself to looking just for reptile products.

ok, sounds like a plan. ill check my local wal-greens tomarrow for some calcium glubionate. i did take zuse back in today for his second calcium shot. he has one more on friday and thats it on the shots. in between shots i administer his calcium suppliments to up keep his progress.
