Meet Moffy!

Miss Lily

Chameleon Enthusiast
I have a new pet! :D This morning I found that my very first silkmoth had emerged! I am so excited... it is the cutest moth I have EVER seen - it's all furry and it washes its feelers with it's front legs! I had no idea just how cute and tiny silkmoths are, even though I have seen pictures. Only thing is I find it way too cute to feed it to the chams, so I have a new pet, for a few days at least!

I only have the one, none of the others spun their cocoons. Does anyone know if mine is male or female? Is there a way to tell the difference with a single one?

Anyways, here's some pics of Moffy! Edit - I probably should have posted this in the feeder section, but it's not going to be eaten!

I love silkworm moths! And nice job on getting a close-up! They only live for a couple of days, so enjoy it while you can!

Oh it's so cute! I wish crickets and roaches were that cute! lol That way I might actually be inclined to touch them instead of having a large collection of tweezers.

HA! Olimpia, I'm glad I'm not the only one with a "collection" of tweezers!! :D:D I have them laying all over the house! When it comes to catching stuff, I am like the Karate Kid with them. :p

Tiff that is just so cool, how did you do it? I have never tried to get a silk worm to cocoon, let alone have it hatch. And it is completely adorable. i am so jealous!!

It's much too bad they don't live longer, they do look cute... for being a bug that is.

I have several pairs of tweezers too! When i first got Lily I couldn't even pick up a tub of locusts or crix! Lily helped me with that, lol!:D Its amazing what you can do and overcome when you love something and want it that badly!

I didn't try! They usually all die for me, so when one started spinning two weeks ago it was fascinating to watch, then this morning - BAM! The cocoon had a brown hole in one end and Moffy was sat on the side of the tub! I have never ever seen such a cute moth! I have a few other silkies looking rather large, but as yet they haven't started spinning. I have now been encouraged to buy some more to see if I can breed them!:D I knew that they were cute from pics I've seen on the 'net, but oh my, they are just so sweet - tiny l'il things, lol! I think Moffy is about 1cm long, bless!

Awww Moffy is so adorable! I had a hornworm that turned into a moth, but it was the ugliest thing lol. Silkmoths are so much cuter! :D

Great pics, the first one is just awesome.

It has inspired me to boil up some food and transfer my guys/gals to keep them sustained and maybe separate a breeding batch. Of course I have no idea what I am doing but I hope to at least have an adventure and maybe success.

Are hornworm moths edible? My beardie is the only one that seems to like them -- of course they grow enormous very quickly, even he seems to be amazed by them, so the chams haven't really had the opportunity to sample them. The skink doesn't seem to get too excited about them. Of course he doesn't seem to have a big appetite. But then I am still trying to work out his preferences.

Haha im the same, i run a mile if one touches me, what would we do without good old tweezers? LOL good job my Mia likes her grass hoppers the most, i don't mind them.

Over a year of herp keeping later and I still don't touch anything except really small crickets or butterworms. Anything else gives me the goosebumps! lol I'm afraid that superworms will bite or something and I find the other things really gross.... blagh! I too am like a ninja now with tweezers when something escapes! haha.

I might get over it all eventually, but for right now I cope well with tweezers!
