mercury vapor lights

I recently decided to try some mercury vapor 100w bulbs (reptispa) with a few of my chams. Even after making necessary adjustments for temps, its been nearly a week and all the ones under these lights are looking darker in color and in my opinion less healthy in appearance. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas why this would be? Maybe the mercury vapors are dehydrating them somehow more rapidly? Idk

I once had a discussion on having a chameleon in direct sunlight for to long and was told that they can become sunburnt. Just figured I would share that with you. I used to grow coral with 100watt Mercury vapors and or metal halides to mimic the sun. Not saying I'm right just a thought.

Yes exactly its both uva amd uvb, so it made sense to try some but I really domt like what I seeing. It could be an adjustment period but idk. They are about 3 inches from the top of the cage. And atleast 8 inches from asking area. I tried to get the same temps i had before with the incandecent ones directly on top. I tried with some of my sub adults that are in large reptbreeze cages.

The best guy to talk to is Todd from LightMyReptiles. I just order a new light from him. This man knows his stuff. He will tell you right light for your encloser and animal..

I've been hearing more and more about MVB, it has also piqued my interest. Please keep us updated on how your chams progress under this light if you can. It may be a future purchase for myself

I had it 6-8" above the cage to keep the appropriate temp, however it was hard to keep the humidity up. Once I put in a tropical bulb the humidity stayed at the correct percentage.
This is the light I use now. It has uva and uvb.

From what I've seen on different groups and even a local reptile shop, the MVB seems to be suspended quite a bit farther away than the usual heat/uvb set up. I've also always seen it used in addition to these set ups, not as a stand alone.

Great thanks for all your help and advice. That makes sense I guess with the darker colors , but I also think what is happening is that my humidity levels are down like chameleon mike said. They seem to just dry everything out way more. So I will either have to switch back I think or set up a completely different misting system. I just hadn't taken the humidity levels into account before purchasing not had I heard to beware of it.

I did the same thing. The other mercury I got was for basking, 100 watt. Now I use them together. I keep the basking light in the back corner and the florescent bulb in the front corner, where the mister sprays. The heat and humidity levels are right where they should be.

If you are going to use the Reptisun, the long tubes are best. The T5 HO does a good job.

It's the 36 inch with 6% Arcadia grow lights and daytime. I sent him picture of my encloser and chameleon. I listened to what Todd told me to do. The man knows his stuff. He gives what is best for your setup and animal
