Mistking or HomeDepot Timer...

Should I go with the mistking timer or just grab one at HomeDepot?

I'm pumped (bad pun? okay terrible pun..) to get my mistking! ordering tonight or tomorrow morn.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

you probably need a "seconds" timer - for flexibility. Radio Shack sells them too maybe. Mist King timers are good and allow you to turn on and off your mister many, many times a day for only seconds at a time as needed. As long as you can get these features in a timer you are fine. Don't get too psyched too soon - Mist King is in Canada so it will take a while to get to to PA. Worth the wait though - good product.

I am using the mist king timer I really like it. In fact I purchased a second one from Mist King for my lights also. They are easy to program and have lots of settings if needed, with a battery backup.

Though I have not tried the one from home depot I am sure it would also work fine. Going digital with a battery backup to save your settings after a power outage would be my best.

The timers that I found at Home Depot only allowed for 1 minute intervals at the shortest, which did not work for what I wanted. If you can handle only being able to stop and start at 1 minute intervals then go with that.

I have both and ordered the Mist King timer after an exhaustive search for a seconds timer where I live (due to shipping costs from Canada).

well the order is in cats and kittens. got the beginner misting unit and I ended up just getting the mistking timer. i'm excited to have a nice misting machine. plus i think my dude will really benefit from the extra humidity and drinking water while i'm at work: I've never once saw him drink from the dripper, but he readily drinks from my mistings.

I'll be mounting the nozzle via these insturctions:

any other advice I should know about the unit? I have to travel for 2 days unexpectedly and after talking with Marty, it looks like my unit should be here 2 or 3 days before I'm leaving. Not much time to work out any kinks, but I think I can dial it in if I know what I'm getting into...

hey ChamOh..
i pondered the same question and decided to go with the MistKing Timer, for all of the reasons listed above ^^^^.
i think it was the right way to go, since i won't really know what my misting needs are, pending humidity levels, plant ability to keep the humidity up, etc.,, after the enclosure is set up and functional.. buying theirs will give me many more options!! :)

oh yeah,, thanks for the Instillation Instructions... i couldn't figure out what the smaller 4 holes were for ..... now i even know what kind and size of screw to get!!!!! ;)

thanks ,,lisa

hi Lisa. you're welsome, that link is a great guide to installing the nozzle. is yours up and running? How do you like it? I went with the MK timer for ease really. There's proabably not a great need to dial in a 5 minute and 10 second misting session for our purposes (I think 5 minutes flat would suffice), but it's a nice timer, with many options, and I really wouldn't be saving much by getting a lesser one at HD so I threw it in my cart.

Also, anyone have any suggestions for getting the system up and running without hitting too many speed bumps?

no Matt,,

i'm sorry to report that mine isn't running yet.. :(

i just recently got it and my cage so HOPEFULLY my husband will be able to help me with the instillation!!!
i'm hoping to get my little man around the first week in June so it will be all set up and functional before them... i'd like to get the kinks ironed out b4 he arrives!!! :)

i'm going after the necessary screws at HD today so maybe i can sway him tonight to assemble it!!! wish me luck!!! i'm tired of looking at the opened MistKing box!!! ;)

That tutorial is awesome and there is nothing at all wrong with how he did it - but it might be more than you need. I have 5 cages (and 5 nozzles) hooked to my Mist King and I use a simpler approach. I just buy a small piece of plexiglass (3' x 3') from home depot and cut triangles from it. I stick the triangles on top of the cage but lay them right on the screen - no screws into the frame. The plastic rests on the screen but has the sides of the frame to push against. I then drill a hole thru the plexiglass triangle and do everything else the way the tutorial shows. The plexiglass just serves as a base to hold the nozzle so that the nozzle isn't supported by the screen alone. The mister isn't a garden hose so there is not a huge amount of pressure thru it - I have never had an issue. You could probably use a triangle made out of any rigid material. Again, the tutorial is perfect and this is an awesome long term solution. If you are feeling less adventurous or less handy - you could do it much simpler and it will work.

i just realized i don't think the mistking basic setup comes with a corner wedge...or i am wrong?

You really will not need the corner wedge. As mentioned earlier cut a hole in any rigid plastic and you can use that to mount the nozzle.

In my latest cage I didnt use anything, its right on the screen and I dont even notice a difference. I just had to be careful to cut a nice tight hole that just fit the nozzle.

You will be very happy with the system, and the setup overall is quite easy. Assuming you have the correct size hole saw and can easily cut the hole in the bucket the rest of the setup is quite straight forward.

what size bucket have you guys found to be nice (not filling daily, etc) for misting one enclosure?

i went to the hardware store and bought two large washers, one for each side of the screen. poked a hole in the screen where i wanted the nozzle to go, put a washer on the nozzle and put it up through the hole, the other washer on top & screwed it together. thats it!

what size washer is that? good thinking!

I use a 5 gallon bucket. I only have to fill it once a week and it's doing 4 cages. You will love th for my system. The timer is the easiest to use. Your cham will love it also.

not sure of the size. i took my nozzle with me and found the ones that fit! as far as the bucket goes i bought mine @ a hydroponic shop, a 10 gallon with a lid. in black to prevent algea from growing. i brought my bulkhead with me & they drilled it out to fit.

I've used the washer-method myself - even easier than the plastic triangle. I think the directions you get with the set-up will tell you what size drill bit you need for the hole in your bucket. Follow the directions - it will say something like "should fit tight". Something else to think about - what happens if you are away and the seal on your bucket breaks or your timer fails and leaves the nozzle on for an hour or more. The good news about using a 5 gallon bucket is that the worst that can happen is that you could end up with 5 gallons of water in your cham room - which might be your living room. I sit my bucket in a big plastic tub as an emergency leak precaution. Might just want to stand back and look at your set-up and try to figure out what might go wrong - then try to plan for it. Another reason to move everything outside!

I use Coroplast.

number for misters per cage

How many mistking nozzels would you suggest for a cage 24"x24" by 48" tall? Is one enough?

Thanks!
