more than 1 uvb light

So i have an extra hood lamp and was wondering if its okay to put another uvb bulb? I already have an 18" reptisun 5.0 bulb would it be okay to put another reptisun 5 bulb in the extra lamp?

if you have live plants drop a 6500k bulb in it and watch them groooow!

Yes I have 2 different live plants. The lamp is only safe up to 100 watt bulbs. Its just a small clamp lamp.

100w cfl 6500k replacement screw in bulbs at lowes, you will not believe how much light that 1 cfl will put out and how little heat, 1400ish lumens!

UVB are usually 6500k,

Go for a 5000k bulb, it will be good for the plants but also bring out the colors of your chameleon better than 6500k.

ahhh I thought reptisun 5.0 were 5500k not 6500k? I know their naturesun 2.0 is 6500k. I know that my reptisun 5.0 is whiter than the small cfl 6500k i have in a clamp on light.

So just a little confused on this, and want to know more.

I was refering to this bulb...

100w CFL 6500k

But Zen brought a point that I am not sure of 100% when suggested the 5000k cfl.

I believe the reptisun is 5500k not 6500k, the bulb you pick is purely personal preference to be honest. Both 5000k or 6500k are good for plants, its just the 6500k is a bit more blue hue than a 5000k bulb.

Fwiw, I just got a 48" 6500k and 48" reptisun 5.0 and it's night can day between the two. The 6500k is MUCH brighter than the 5.0...

so these bulbs will help the plant grow?

Yes a light bulb with a 5000k-6500k range will help stimulate plant growth.

The higher the kelvin rating the bluer the color and the lower the kelvin the redder the color of the light. Supposedly 6700k is equal to noon with a clear sky @ the equator.

I have 3 lights 1 basking light & 1 6500k cfl in a double dome lamp and then my 1 reptisun 5.0 tube light. However I am waiting on my new double fluorescent fixture to come in and will then have the reptisun 5.0 & a 6500k light and just use one clamp on light for the basking spot.

If you are asking can you use just the 100w cfl 6500k for a basking light, then I doubt it. A cfl does not put off the heat a normal light bulb does. But if your asking can you put that in a basking lamp housing, yes it will work in those lamps.

not sure I understand what part your concerned about, the fact its a cfl or the kelvin rating?

Some people think if you over use UVB lighting or use to high of a output you can damage your Chameleons eyes. However I have always had the "more is best" attitude. I use a 8 Lamp High Output Fluorescent T5 Light System and every bulb is 5.0 . I have a small closet for my chams and the entire closet glows. I keep fans in there to keep it ventilated but it also stays very humid. I actually keep the UVB lights attached to the ceiling. It works perfect... I am not very well educated on eye damage from UVB in Chameleons, however if this sparks you interest you might want to do more research on it. I have just never encountered this problem... however you seem more than okay with the double UVB or the 6500k.

After this thread began yesterday I ran to walmart and found a CFL 6500k a 2 pack for six bucks! So now i have the same as u. A double dome with a 6500k and a basking, and a linear 5.0.
Some of my plants are out for reconditioning so its a little bare but the 6500k made it look amazing! 1200lumens btw

yeah I may have been off on the lumens exactly... was going from memory and i have 3 strikes against me when it comes to my memory:

1. married
2. a father
3. over 40

Yeah I can understand the concern over the over usage of uvb. However the suggestion to use a uvb 5.0 and a 6500k light together is not something I thought of, far from it. This combo has been around for many yrs in the herp community i believe. I am just echoing the usage. A CFL emits uv but not at a harmful level it had been determined and the modern cfl do not cause the blindness issues reported with early cfl's.

I do not know the complete composition and could not find the information online about components used in the making of a "UVB" bulb versus a "normal" bulb, but I do believe it relies heavily on the phosphor levels in the bulb. Bulbs producing a marked level of uvb that would be note worthy are different and thus the ability to use these 6500k lights with the uvb. Its not the lumens or kelven ratings that create the UVB.

Ok so. 6500k CFL bulb won't have any negative affect on the chameleon but will help the plants grow? If this is true I'm otw to home depot right now hahha
