My Bug factory

I don't breed my crickets as I'm really lucky to have a great hookup on them.My roaches are just in a bin with a heat pad under it on 24/7. They do great even with me feeding mainly adult roaches to my Chameleons.

I wish I had something like that! My crickets never seem to breed and same with my roaches :/

I got them from someone in our club. The lay a lot of eggs but I don't sell them.

I actually haven't got my stick set up dialed in enough to be producing enough to feed off. So I guess they are more pets then feeders so far.:D

Where did you get your walking sticks? I can't find them anywhere in the US. Do they breed for you? Do you ever sell any of them?

Thanks Robin. I don't know if I have that kind. I get quite a few different mantis from someone in our Chameleon club. I can't remember which ones I get sometimes.:D So far I don't breed them but I'm picking up some new cages I'm hoping to put adult pairs in.

Wow, that´s impressing! I just got a few sphodromantis lineola that i´ll try to breed.
Do you have this species, too? If yes, could you give me some advice on how to incubate the eggs best? Would be great

No. maybe put out a light at night with a catch bin under it for moths. I'm sure if you do a search on the Internet you will find so good info.

I have a couple giant katydids but they are not male/female. Would love to have a source for these but haven't found one yet.

Any tips on catching katydids or moths ?

I have so many mantis right now. I while back I was having trouble hatching ooths and made a little incubator. I had 11 ooths hatch in a week and a half.

How different is keeping crickets from dubias? I get about 500 crickets every three weeks and they are fairly easy to keep/breed. Are dubias harder, easier, or just about the same?

Dubia could not be easier IMO. Put them in a bin with some screen on the top, put a heat pad under them and feed'em.

The way I keep my crickets seems to works great. I can keep crickets for months with little die off. I just don't want the hassle of breeding them.

My crickets seem to be breeding on their own...it's weird. I ordered 500 large and about a week and a half later I had babies popping up. I'm assuming they just laid their eggs on the cardboard egg crate and paper towel rolls.

I love bugs! The only one I manage to keep successfully though is my tarantula "itsy". Its not that I cant keep them, I just aint got the bandwith .

With Chameleons, gardens, work, school, dogs, and a girlfriend, the bugs always seem to lack the proper care...except for itsy, we love itsy.

Lately I have been feeding my Chameleons more than one kind of bug everyday.
Here's what I have on hand right now.

BB flies
House flies
Silk worms
Small Horn worms
Large Horn worms
Small super worms
Large super worms
Dubia roaches
Three sizes of crickets
Hydei FF's
Melangaster FF's
Several kinds and sizes of Praying Mantis
Walking sticks
Katydids

Katydids?! I love feeding katydids... dont suppose you breed those?? ;)

I know what you mean. It's a lot of work. When I got my Parson's I made a commitment to try my hardest to provide them with what they need to thrive as best I could. Providing a varied diet is one of the things that's important IMO.

The Mantis take the most time by far. Feeding and watering them, changing and cleaning all those f'n cups:) Buying feeders for them....It's a pain in the butt, but they sure love'em.

I've been spending way too much time on bugs and not enough time fishing:)

Good plan, nice selection. Interesting you dont bother with supers or mealworms (they are so little trouble to breed, compared to some of the others, and fit nicely into a diet that also has silkworms and hornworms)

And dont worry, you will have hundreds of sticks soon enough. Luckily, I am certain you will find these to be a cham favourite.

I do feed supers, they're on that list. I just buy them as I get a good deal on those too . I buy a 1000 at a time and they last me months.

I am sad for you now! You must FISH!!! I caught my 4th 4 pound largemouth today. Fishing keeps me sane.
