There are a couple of things you can try. First of all, be careful to be wearing the right colors when around him. I keep some kaki colored, and dull green shirts around to throw on over my clothes when I approach my chams. This makes a HUGE difference. If they see me in the wrong colors they get upset.
This made me laugh....cause its true. I live in a studio apt. that I "share" with my 6yr. old panther chameleon(I've had him since he was 3 months old). He is a "free ranger".....he lives on a ficus in a large planter, but has a rope ladder of sorts which gives him access to the whole apt. He is very dossile and doesn't mind being handled at all. (he'll actually approach and try to climb me if I'm the easiest route to where he is wanting to go).HOWEVER, there are 2 exceptions: 1- when he's sleeping/trying to sleep....don't mess w/a sleeping cham. (sometimes I have to as he can find some "inconvenient places to nap), and 2. When he sees me put on certain clothes. Occasionally he see me change clothes and goes APESH#T. I haven't figured out a pattern, or specific piece of clothing. its just sometimes, but it always coincides with a clothes change. Sometimes when it happens he does this defensive thing that is hilarious.......he'll climb onto his rope ladder, get opposite from me and become super-thin.(it looks like a 1/4" rope with feet and a big head floating behind it) then if I move, he moves to stay opposite from me(the squirrel trick)....like i cant see his giant head sticking out though. I'll try to get pics/video sometime.
