Not sure I'd label that vet as irresponsible (which implies that he deliberately gave bad advice), but I would say the vet is ignorant or poorly trained as so many are...and to make matters worse didn't check good care resources before giving advice to the OP.

This is why I said irresponsible. It is completely understandable to not know, but to give wild accusations and tout them as fact is irresponsible. The responsible thing for this vet to do would be accept that he didn't know and either refer OP to one that did or call someone that did for advice.

At the very least he could have said, I think you should do this, however I am not greatly experienced with this species so seek a second opinion.

Hey guys, I spoke with the owner of many chameleons and an exotic pet shop near me. We decided to continue the medication but put him back on live food, with a better dusting schedule. I will take a fecal sample to her veterinarian in a few days to check everything out.

That's great! Keep us posted on what the new vet says. Sorry that this has been such a trial for you, but I'm so glad you are seeing a new vet.

Don't bother taking a fecal sample for a few weeks. It should come back negative (after the treatment) even if the parasites haven't been completely eliminated.
