My Green Monsters...The Melleri

Thank you Jann, just looking at Earls picture I still tear up. He was so special.

Thank you for your concern with Crabman. I am not 100% if he is male or female. Crabman did not do well in a cage at all so he did have his own free range and every day he would climb down and go in with the big guys. Since he has been housed there he has packed on 20 grams and his appetite has improved drastically and for him not having bottom teeth that is a huge plus. I don't have heavy concern about Joy trying to breed with him/her due to the courtship pattern Melleri have towards each other and Joy has showed no interest in lil ole Crabby Patty. Rest assure though I monitor these guys thoroughly daily. Again thank you for your concern
That indeed sounds good!
Seems like you know what you´re doing, good luck with all those wonderful creatures :)

yaaay great job with randy!
Looks great!
Makes me so happy to see my baby thriving under your care!

I'm so jealous! I wish my poor little Meller's hadn't passed, I only had him a couple weeks but I was already madly in love with him. These chameleons are so handsome!

Yours look fantastic!

So sad to see what happened to your little guy sorry you didn't get a lot of time with him but I am sure it was enough to fall in love. You will have to try again when you can ;)

Hi Wendy, I have seen you little cutie petewtie! I don't have a picture of my whole set up but I will see what I can do for ya

Jessica what do you think about melleri being a social Cham and needing/wanting other melleri near? I keep wondering if I will need to get a second mellers and when to consider it? Rah is just a baby now. But I need to think long term for this Cham if they really do need companionship. Have you always had more than one, or do you see a difference in behavior of one alone vs 2 or more together?

Happy to have all melleri owners give thoughts on this.

I do believe it depends on the Melleri, their are some that prefer to be or should be housed alone (tail bitters for example) I had only Earl for quiet some time. I bought Randy to be Earls companion but he became ill. I personally will now never own just one. I can say my guys are happier and more content being with each other.

The 3 were seperate for about a year, I was nervous about putting them together  When they were in seperate cages all of them were restless. They climbed the cages alot, Joy paced constantly and Randy was always trying to find that one little spot in the corner where she could peak and see Joy lol.

When I introduced them I did it slowly first I took down the visual barrier let them see each other. They flapped their lobes and bobbed their heads speaking in their little melleri language, it was amazing to watch. Then I put them in a window free range together off and on until they were comfortable with each other. They really disliked going back so I put them together in a make shift free range. Crabman just decided to join the party on his own. I was trying to wait til he was bigger but after putting him back in his own free range 100,000 times I stopped fighting it and let him stay. As every one can see in the picture he (or she lol) was accepted openly. As I mentioned Crabbies appetitie increased with the others. Joy is actually more out going with people now, he use to be so shy he would hide when I walked in the room he hand feeds now. Randy is pretty much the same except now she doesnt like to be picked up lol

It's going to be up to you Laurie if you think Rah needs a friend. I am sure he is going to be perfect with or with out a buddy. Good thing about getting him a friend is then you will have two :p:D

This is interesting, Jessica, because my Baby has been pacing on the inside of her cage that faces my Panther's FR. Sometimes the panther comes over to check her out, but he's kind of used to her now & tools around the FR most of the day. I used to think Baby was stressed when Kirby would be near her cage, but now I'm wondering if she LIKES seeing him? My roommate swears that both chams like having the other in sight from their respective areas. Kirby now sleeps in a ficus in his FR that has a direct view of Baby's cage - he used to obsess about being OVER her cage (on her light), but he's settled into a routine as long as I keep the curtain open (I rigged a room divider - a work of art - that Kirby learned to scale in mere seconds! Brat. Lol).

Thank you everyone for the compliments! I just adore Melleri thay are such a wonderful chameleon to keep.

What she said!! The best, actually. But then again, I'm biased. (Jessica, PM will be sent today...;))

I totally agree with Jessica. In my experience, there have been several that have wanted to be alone, but there have been several that have preferred to be with others. You just have to figure that out. But in general, they are social creatures, both with humans and with other melleri.

For you, Laurie, in your case, it's easier to do this when they are little, like in Rah's case. As I have witnessed with these babies and while I keep separating them by size, they establish their pecking order and go with it. It just takes more time and is a little more difficult when you are introducing bigger ones to each other.

Their area is about 10+ feet long 9.5 feet high and 5 feet deep then they have another area in front of the window (when there are no ants ) that is a stand about 4 feet long with trees and such so they get window time.

I will be adding on to make their area bigger after the New Year :)

wow, that's crazy!

Good grief 38 inches is a bit of an exaggeration.

They are big though- about 20-24" for an adult. really big adults a little more perhaps. I've read rumors of 28 but don't know if I believe that.

The are the largest african species. The madagascan giants Parsons and male oustallets can outsize them.
