My Phelsuma and chameleon room

i guess you need some glasses or tilt your pc screen, so pls no more replies about how the orientation of the lamps are. tnx.

hi joery.
nice set up.

i was interested in the basking info u provided, and i think it like you about general attitude to overexpose chameleons to uvb.

you said
it is also the case that animals can store vit d3 (fat solluble vitamin) for a certain period of time

i don't understand what you mean by this.
thanks.

To explain it simple: a precursor molecule of vitamine d3 is produced in skin cells. This precursor (provitamin d3) is after exposure of the organism to UV-B light transformed into previtamin d3. After uptake in the blood stream it is metabolised in the liver to another molecule called calcediol. Finally, the calcediol is then transformed in tissues to calcetriol which plays a major role in calcium house keeping. The calcediol half-life (meaning the time to reduce the amount calcediol with 50%) is only 2 weeks in the blood stream, though unmetabolised vitamin D3 is stored in fat tissue, though most research on vitamine d3 is done in humans, but the results are hypothesized to be similar in reptiles. This is also why long-term overdosage of vitamine d3 supplementation (in food or water) is harm full, since it is stored in fat and you built up levels of vitamin d3 that are dangerous. You will not have this problem with normal uv-b exposure, since the organism that is exposed to uv-b has a built-in negative feedback system to stop vitamine d3 production.

It's a beautiful set up!
I think the lights are positioned well. The chameleons can go lower to be directly under them, higher to be across from them, or to the other side to be away from them.
Very nice work all the way around.

I like this setup and was considering something similar if I wanted more presentable/"upscale" housing in a home office or such. Just curious, do you have a mist system (maybe out of sight), or do you hand spray them?

Looks like you put alot of effort into this, great set up man. I'm loving the before and after pictures :D.

I spray by hand twice/three times a day, i prefer to do it manually since you have then the obligation to check upon your animals twice a day at least,

I love your phelsuma enclosures and the racks you have them in. It is very professional and classy. Manual spraying is an excellent way to actually enjoy your animals. You can watch them drink and wash their eyes.

Awesome!

Just wondered if you had any plans/blue prints/designs/advice that you followed for the aluminium racks, as I am hoping to build something similar soon and want to do my research first.

Thanks
