Need help!! Nosy mitsio eye problem

hi there been have an issue with one of my WC mitsio. He was a huge big since he got here gained a ton of weight then I found out with a fecal he had coccidia. Have treated with Baycox and waiting for next round of meds. His eye however has been getting worse and worse by the day he has stopped eating now and sitting with his eyes closed during the day especially the one with the problem. I was kinda thinking it was a vit A prob but not sure I don’t want to slam a bunch of vit A into him if it not the prob. My vet doesn’t know what it is either. Showers don’t help Terramycin doesn’t help.... any ideas plz help!! Thank you and merry Christmas

Your chameleon has some edema going on. It usuall is due to organ failure, most commonly kidney or also possible liver failure.

I have never heard of Baycox to treat Coccidia. Do you mean Baytril? And if so, that is not the correct med. He should be given Ponzuril. If the Coccidia is not treated correctly it could be causing your chameleon to be lethargic and close his eyes.

Did a little research on the Baycox and like I said never heard of it but see it is used to treat Coccidia. I would still ask for the Ponzuril. It works well and does not seem to effect their appetite while on treatment. I have used it with success.

Ok ya I will ask for the Ponazuril for the next round of treatment if he makes it... what should I do about the Edema?? I was going to maybe try and force feed carnivore care today as he has not eaten in 7 days now except for a small horn worm. Thoughts?

You said he was a wild caught, when was he imported? If he is undergoing treatment immediately, he may be undergoing lots of stress, which could kill him. Be careful about force feeding, I would be careful about that, and maybe get more info about it, especially if you never tried it.

He was brought in October this yr. he was treated with panacur he showed no signs of stress until the baycox was given and a week before that his eye had began to change a bit. I’ve force fed a bunch of times to save chams so that’s no issue just never dealt with coccidia before and treatment....

I had a panther I got from a guy on here. He had it bad when I got him. He was 4 yrs old and according to owner had it most his life and went on to live another 2.6 yrs with me. As far as force feeding it is really up to you. I know they can go weeks without food, but that is more for a healthy chameleon. You will more yhan likely need multiple treatments of Ponzuril to get rid of Coccidia. I would take cage apart and disinfect or throw everything out to be safe. It is very easy to reinfect. Do a search on here on the formula to use for disinfecting. I did do it, when I was dealing with it but dont remember. It was peroxide mixed with water. I got it at a beauty supply store. I had to do 3 rounds of treatment on my guy that got it. He had been fine ever since and that was over 3 yrs ago. Best of luck

Did u use Ponazuril? Vet has given me baycox cuz he said it kills the coccidia really good can be hard on them but said they usually don’t have too much of an issue

Yes I used Ponzuril. He never quit eating the whole time I was treating him. I was told by other keepers to use the Ponzuril. My vet wanted to prescribe Albon and I told him I wanted the Ponzuril. It has to be mixed by a specialty pharmacy though.

Sometimes, if the parasite load is immediately treated after importation, their body can stress, and parasite levels could rise. If you keep taking in imports, maybe wait for the body to acclimate, and deal with most of the parasites on its own. JMO.

Thanks for the replies everyone!! I think I’m going to ask and make sure I have the Ponazuril on hand the baycox deff seems hard on them. Getting fecals done again in 2 weeks to see if the coccidia has all been killed. Have had to force feed the past few days to get some nutrients in him as it’s been like 13 days since he ate a real meal
