New boy...

Well, I am going to try the Chameleon thing again. While out of town over Spring Break I found a great looking (healthy) male Veiled Chameleon. The store employee wasn't sure of his age but said he was less than a year old. He was in a very clean enclosure (all screen with live plants) and was very active. He has an attitude but that's OK. I knew going into chameleon ownership that most don't like to be handled. He loves food...crickets, worms...He also loves water and i have seen him drink every day since I have gotten him. He shed the day after I got him and never stopped eating. His poop looks normal and he appears nice and hydrated. He is very camera shy so I will post pictures as soon as I can get a good one. I am gonna need some help on trying to determine his age if its possible to do with measurements and pictures. I am so glad that I have all of yall on here for great advice and I will continue to ask questions when I have them.

Thanks a bunch....:D

congrats Virginia!! glad to hear you got a new baby :) cant wait to get a look at him :D
he sounds like he is settling good already!

Rebel....

Well, Rebel is settling in nicely. He love to eat and drink and he has found his favorite spot to sleep. He likes crickets, butter worms and phoenix worms. I'm gonna try silk worms next.

he is super camera shy so I took a picture after he went to sleep. I'm gonna try to get a better picture after he settles in completely.

he is gorgeous!!! im so happy for you!! he looks great :) not surprised he doesnt like the camera, most chams dont no matter what age they are :D i like the name you picked for him too, he looks like a Rebel!

Age???

Can any one help me figure out aprox. how old Rebel is. He is aprox. 4 inches from vent to nose(may be a little longer..its kinda hard measuring him while he is inside of his cage) and I am unsure of his weight. (my food scale doesn't measure in grams). The people at the pet store where I purchased him were unsure of his age. They said he was under a year old. I just want to know so that I can set up a healthy feeding schedule. Rebel is a little pig and will eat whatever I put in his enclosure. There are a few pic. on the earlier part of this thread.

Also, at what age should I purchase him a larger enclosure. At this time he is in a 18x18x36 all screen enclosure and my brother and I are planning on modifying a piece of furniture into a home for him when he gets bigger. What size should I be looking for? Also, when he gets a little bigger should I change to a 10.0 UVB bulb? Sorry for all of the questions .. I have had bad luck with my rescue and my first purchased cham. and I want to be sure to keep Rebel healthy and happy.

Thanks :D

i would agree with Jamall on age. also, you could put him into an adult cage now! bigger is always better and im sure he would love getting into a larger cage :) i recommend a 24 inch wide x 24 inch deep x 48 inch tall, that the general adult cage for veileds.

for a uvb light, i would personally go with a 10.0 because since you are planning to move him to the adult cage, it will need to cover more area and the uvb will be diluted by the screen on top of the cage. i also recommend the linear uvb bulbs as they spread the uvb throughout the cage much better :)

Thanks so much. If I am unable to find a piece of furniture that size to modify what is a good place to get an enclosure that size. my local pet store has a used one for $159.00 but I am thinking I can find one online cheaper... I think I will start looking threw the sponsors and see what I can find...Guess its time to save up for a bigger home for Rebel..;)

I have a new boy to .Guess were new parents:)

Yep... I am super excited that Rebel is doing so well. My family thinks I'm strange because I talk to my lizards... I have a bearded dragon, a crested gecko and no Rebel my veiled chameleon... you need to post some pics. of your new boy..everyone likes to see them ...lol

im getting mine that size from LLL Reptile online. its 150.00 with shipping if you get the drip tray, but you can also construct one at home pretty easy :) thats the cheapest i have found good quality enclosure online! its the XLarge screen enclosure i believe. if you dont get the tray its 103.00 with shipping!

they also carry uvb fixtures and bulbs there good prices! and their customer service is great :) i called them to ask how much everything i wanted would be for shipping and they immediately answered, had my questions answered kindly and i was off the phone in two minutes!

drinking..

I was watching Rebel this morning to see if he would drink. I sat up his dripper and backed away from his enclosure. He was on the opposite side of the cage when the water started dripping. He shot the drop with his tongue like he would a cricket. I couldn't believe it. Guess I know how he drinks when I'm away during the day. lol I just thought it was the neatest thing...

Yea my guy does that for the most part also, I don't ever see him go over there and lap up water with is tongue but instead he is always a lil bit away and just shoots out that tongue to get it. It just doesn't seem like he could very much water this way but i guess he does do it over and over again for a period of time.
