Hello everybody, new to the board and my first of probably many questions. I just picked up a baby veiled at the White Plains, N.Y. show for $30. I was told he was captive bred but am beginning to wonder because the price seems pretty low. Any thoughts? He seems to be eating well.Thanks.

Well....

You can get Veilds even captive bred ones for a low price, I have seen them many times for $30,$40 or $50 esp if the person has a bunch to be sold or wants to place them quickly.... so I wouldn't be suspicious of that.

Good luck with your Veild. Do you know about proper housing, lighting, supplementation, feeding ect? If not let us know and we will be happy to help.

I agree, veilds are a very popular species in the chameleon world, so they are bred alot and can be sold cheap. how old is the cham you bought?

Not sure how old, the body is about 2 " long excluding his tail. Right now he is in a small 8x12x17 screen enclosure that will probably need to be upgraded in the future. I have a spiral 56 watt(I think) UVB tropical bulb that was reccomended and a 60 watt basking bulb. Am I on the right track with these? Temp where he mostly stays is 84. He is eating about 3-6 mealworms and crickets a day. That seems alot for his size. I have read about gut loading and started doing it. I've been dusting. It took about 4 days for him to start drinking. Going to look into a drip system because spraying a few times a day isn't practical.

id suggest getting a Linear UVB tube bulb(recommend a reptisun 5.0) instead of using the coil bulb, they have been known to cause eye problems. 84 is a little hot for a little guy, raise up the lamp a bit to try to get the basking area around 80 degrees. Good idea on the dripper but you still need to mist you cage to keep the humidity up, since i live in canada and its winter now there isnt much humidity in the air so i am misting at least 3 times a day to keep it at 40% XD haha. What is your dusting schedule?
