So there must be a gap between the screen and the ridges in the drain pan(?)The only thing about the easy drip pan is you can not put plants on the screen.
In time (or sooner) it may be easier just to remove the bottom screen entirely. The worst stuff for clogging the drain line will fall through the screen anyway. A filter (aquarium) at the drain should help.
If part of the purpose of the bottom screen is to contain wayward feeders, maybe seal the gap between cage & tray with duct tape or strips of PVC?
