New owner of Yemen/Veiled Chameleon

Hi guys :)

I recently brought home my 3 month old male Yemen/Veiled Chameleon - Frank. I brought him home Thursday 22nd March and thought I'd join this forum for any tips/advice to make sure my husbandry is okay.

I modified an old wooden vivarium (3ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft) and added perches, branches, vines and fake plants. I have used an old towel as most things I've read don't recommend substrate.

I have his basking spot set to 30C - as stated by the care sheet on this site for chameleons under 9 months. I'm a little concerned whether the humidity level is at the correct levels. During the day it seems to sit around 40%-50% and when the UV and heat goes off at night it sits around 70%-80%. I have a homemade dripper which collects into a dish and mist with a spray bottle 3 times a day. I was thinking of getting a live plant to raise the day humidity, but worried the night humidity will get even higher and may be too high??

At the moment this is my daily husbandry schedule:
8:00am - UV an heat comes on, mist the viv and turn on water dripper.
8:15am - Put 10-12 locusts/crickets in the viv before I leave for work and allow him to free range feed. (Dusted with nutrobal)
2:00pm - My mum mists my viv in the afternoon while I'm at work.
6:30pm - Mist again when I'm home and remove any un-eaten insects.
8:00pm - Lights and heat turn off, empty water collection dish and turn off dripper.

Phosphorus free no d3 calcium at almost every feeding, multivitamin 2 times a month and calcium with d3 twice a month

I was told by the shop I bought him from just to use multivitamin (nutrobal) 5 out of 7 days a week. Will too much vitamins cause harm? And I thought the d3 allowed them to digest the calcium?

As a new Cham owner you will soon realize how little the pet stores know about caring for our little friends. The people in this forum are an amazing resource for learning how to properly care for your little guy.

I researched for months to learn how to care for them. But I guess most of it will come with experience. I have experience in reptile keeping but I know chams are a bit more advanced. As I’ve noticed everywhere has a different opinion on how to care for them so thought I’d join this for advice :) the main thing I’m worried about is the humidity levels

That is what the d3 is for but too much can be harmful. When i bought my cham i had no knowledge of chameleons and everyone here on the forums taught me everything i know and helped me get my cham back To the right track

Thanks, I read thorough that care sheet. Just wanted to check if my daily routine was okay? My main worry is the humidity during the day rarely goes over 40% and sits around 70% - 80% during the night. Was thinking of getting a live plant to raise the day humidity but then the night humidity will be even higher

The humidity levels in my 2 cages also drop to 40 percent during the day when the lights are on. After misting it rises to 70-80 percent for a while. In my opinion, as long as you mist everyday, your boy should be ok. I have had my girls for over 2 years with no problems.....

It usually rises to about 50% after misting. The lowest it’s been is 35%. I have a digital humidity gauge and the probe is quite close to the heat at the moment so I’ll move it away and see if that changes anything. Would you recommend a live plant? First day I got him he was trying to eat the fake plants (hasn’t done it since) I’ve been putting kale and carrot in and he’s not interested in it at all so he might like to munch on a real plant. How high is too high for night humidity?

I would not know about too high. Depending on the time of year here in Texas, the night humidity is 40 to 80 percent. I have schefflera arboricola in both of my cages. The girls like to munch on the leaves. Live plants are a must for keeping the humidity up. Be glad you have a boy and do not have to deal with laying bins!

That’s why I chose a boy for my first cos I heard they’re easier. I live in England which is always cold and wet, according to the weather forecast humidity is 70% - 80% all year apart from summer. I will look into getting a live plant for him then :) Thanks, you’ve been very helpful :)
