New Rudis mom and babies.

Hello everyone! Its been awhile since I have been here! My wife is working in bangkok for awhile so I thought I would go to the reptile show here in KC last weekend.

I bought a female Rudis that I knew was gravid....I just didnt know how far along she was!

Well less than 2 full days after getting her, I came home from work to find 11 babies in her cage!

I took them all out and have them in a seperate enclosure now with wet paper towels in the bottome and plenty of sticks and leaves for them to climb on. They are eating FF really well and have seen most of them drinking. I am keeping them in the low 70s with high humidity...does all that sound good so far?

Congratulations on the new additions.

I have seen nursuries that are a lot smaller. Some people use those big tubs with sticks and stuff in them to 'contain' the menu items and make it easier for the kidlets (what are baby chameleons called? chamelettes? )
to catch their supper and to keep the moisture up.

"Neonate(s)" is the word your lookin for Aja. Its the term for baby Chameleons

And yes I agree about keeping them in smaller enclosures, I keep baby Rudis. They were captive born here in my apartment. about 3 weeks old. Sunday will make 4. That enclosure you have there is very excellent for maybe a group of 2 month olds and so forth, but as of now KC, try seperating into groups of 3/4 into seperate 10 gallons. It will make feeding easier for them, less stress/fighting, and easier to maintain the humidity levels. Ive experiencced two deaths of the neonates for not seperating them as fast as I shouldve.

Oh yeah, I also see the female I think? In the first pic on the top left, seperate her from those babies to prevent accidental eatings! FF's are good, but use pinhead crickets also for better nutrition. Gutload those suckers!!!!!!!!

This thread (after the original post) reminds me of how children would look thru a magazine. Look at the pretty pictures and don't read the post. If any of the people who replied would have looked at the text (thats the stuff above the big shiny pictures) he said:

CLEARLY the babies are not in the enclosure in which they were photographed, and obviously not in the same enclosure with the female. It was also stated that there were plenty of sticks and leaves for them to climb on in the new (most likely smaller) enclosure.

When people don't have enough time (or respect) to also read the text that the original poster posted, then don't comment please. It deters the people here who actually take their time and don't just shout out their "experience" and "advice" from posting.

A "senior" member should know better. I believe we just had a banning because one offered advice on whim's with no personal experience.

Good luck to KC, sounds like you got a grip on the situation. There are a few well experienced keepers of rudis on the forum.
They will be easy to spot.

And the first thing that they will tell u....ahem......is that you dont have "Rudis", and that it is sternfeldi that u have tisk tisk.......anyways....

Thanks to everyone that has responded so far!

I read the first few replies from my phone while I was at the new HP movie, and my first thought was that i was not really clear! Glad that everthing actually made sense

i think i already found a guy that will buy the whole lot from me in a few months....if I can keep them alive that long! We leave for Peru in two months and I dont want my normal reptile sitter to have to try and take care of the babies!

Vanessa is doing awesome! Our 9 year old son Parker, takes Vanessa and a few other of the reptiles to different schools to teach kids his age about them! He loves it and Vanessa does a great job of showing off! I have been trying to find someone that has a male so that we can breed her.


Sorry that I called her a Rudis......... I will use the correct term next time

KC - It sounds like you're doing the right thing. I keep my babies in planted Exo-Terra or ZooMed Glass Terrariums (built with special venting for increased airflow). I mist heavily once a day and make sure they have constant access to fruitflies. Depending on your enclosure type, you may have to mist more often and feed multiple times a day to make sure they always have access to fruitflies.
