Hello Everyone!

I started doing research about two weeks ago in preparation to buy a veiled chameleon. I have already located a veterinarian close to me, and picked out where I am buying the chameleon from. I am currently in the process of getting all of the supplies together that I will need to start this new adventure, and I am really excited.

I do have a question for the group. I have run across many cham owners that farm mealworms to supplement a diet. What do you guys think about this idea? I know that mealworms are fatty, and have read in numerous places that they shouldn't be fed as a regular diet. Do you guys think it is worth the trouble?

Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forums! Glad you are doing your research before getting your chameleon. Many people do feed mealworms or superworms but both are fatty as you stated. They are both fine to feed in moderation along with a variety of other insects. I like feeding silkworms which are high in calcium and low in fat. I am not sure by what you mean to farm them.

I've run across many YouTube videos where people breed their own worms. This is what I mean by "farm" them. They call it a mealworm farm. It would probably just be better to buy a variety diet instead of farming worms. Just in what I have read today, chams need a variety of a diet, so I'm pretty sure I have scrapped that idea.

I am going after work to look at some Hibiscus and some Ficus plants, to start gathering materials for the enclosure. I am taking my time. I've wanted one since I wa sin high school, but am just now in the position and have the time to properly care for one.

If you had several chameleons or other reptiles that enjoy meal worms I could totally see starting a farm. How ever, with one chameleon, it may just end up being a waste :)

Welcome to the forums! You are in a GREAT place!
