New Veiled Chameleon

I wasn't totally sure where to put this..., so I put it in the General category. Alright, so I just got my first chameleon today. Here's some info about him-
- he's a male, a veiled chameleon, around two to three months old, but we're not positive. He is very friendly and active. He eats a lot, the pet store told us that's as in sixteen small crickets a day. We've given him about eight, since we've only had him for five hours, and he also ate a mealworm. He doesn't bite. He's about 8ish inches long.
His cage, although I'm not sure of the dimensions, is rather large, and tall, with glass and screen, and a screen top. He has a heat lamp and a UV lamp on top of his cage. As for bedding, we were told to put reptile carpet on the bottom, as he was too young for substrate. He has a water bowl with an air pump in it so that the water moves. He's got a pothos plant, a piece of drift wood that sits on the bottom, a piece of long driftwood that goes to about six inches from the top of the cage, some artificial plants suction cupped to the sides, and some vines and other artificial plants throughout his cage. It sits on a table that's about 3 1/2 feet off of the ground. We let the crickets we feed him crawl around the cage, but the mealworms sit in a bowl. We mist him and his cage quite a bit, but not too much. The humidity is about at 85% most of the time, and the heat is at 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit. We're also saving up for a humidifier.

So, here are my questions. Like I said, the lamps just sit on the screen (we were told this was fine), however our chameleon, (his name is Perkins), has been climbing up the screen and crawling on the top of the cage upside down and we are afraid he'll get burned. He has also fallen from it once, but fortunately we were able to catch him, but I'm afraid we won't be around to next time. There is no way to prevent him from climbing the screen that we have thought of.
So, I was just wondering if anyone had some advice about the above questions? And if you had any other helpful tips?

Congratulations on your 1st cham :3

Seems like a nice set up to me. Although a pic of the cage would be great. he might not have enough things to climb on thats why he is all over his cage. They like to be high, make sure you have criss-crossing beams that sits up high for him to climb on. I recommend not using a substrate its usually is a pain to clean and gives the feeders a place to hide and harbors fungi and bacteria. Just keep the carpet. I keep mine substrate free with no carpet and I find it easier to clean the poop and pee with out anything.

Now with the presence of those twigs and new climbing platforms I also recommend taping some clear tape to the corners of the cage circumventing the whole cage. Chams cant climb the smooth surface of tape so that would prevent him from climbing beyond that line. I recommend using a packing tape about at least 2 or 3 inches and make sure you also tape the out side. The bond between the tape inside and outside will make it stronger and last longer even with spraying (hopefully :D ) Just aim your nozzle top to down, I advice.

if that doesn't work, just get a mounted clamp light fixture. ALSO I almost forget what is the wattage of your bulb? Make sure its nothing above 60 watts if its that close

Hope this helps!

Greetings and welcome- great advice by kwengkynator and camimom; I would also add:

Be careful about providing too much moisture/humidity, Veileds are not a rainforest species. I recommend a good misting once or twice a day, and let his habitat dry out in between waterings. You can provide a deep watering once a week with a dripper or a gentle warm shower.

If your outdoor weather permits I recommend getting a screen cage and housing him outdoors on nice sunny days. Chams thrive in natural sunlight.

Crickets and mealworms are a good start, but I recommend additional insects- roaches, wax worms, horned worms, etc. Gutloading insects like crickets and roaches on vegetables is also a good idea. Variety helps maintain optimum nutrition and prevents your cham from getting bored with the one type of insect-

Thank you! This actually helped quite a bit! I'm not sure the exact wattage, but we're getting something to hang the lights, considering it's made us nervous that our cat may knock them down. Here's a photo of his cage-

He needs more walk ways at the top, not too close but high enough for him to bask without climbing the screen.
Is he definitely a he? Does he have the little spurs/bumps on back feet?
Great name by the way, it's also my cats name ;)
