I may be getting a veiled chameleon in two months or so. I know the basics but is there anything else I should know in regards to care/taming? Would anyone recommend a Jackson's or Panther instead? Thanks in advance.

I'm attaching a link for the resources page here on the site in regards to care. As for "taming," there's a method to the madness, but it also depends on what species of cham your looking at and the individual cham you get. You can do a search for threads on that subject. Good reading.

As for recommended species, it depends on what you want out of your pet. Each have their different merits and pitfalls. Do your research on each you may find interesting and hit up folks here that have a certain species you're interested in. I could talk your ear off about Lucky my turquoise veiled. Don't hesitate to ask questions, do your research and read, read and read all you can and then, once you've made your mind up, read some more. Welcome to the madness that is chameleon keeping.

Chameleons in general require specific care. Most would say the "easier" type to start with would be a Veiled or Panther. I think many start with veiled because they are lower in price than panthers. Jacksons require cooler temps and that can be a challenge during summer months where it gets very warm. As long as you do your research on chameleon husbandry and know what to expect you will be a successful chameleon owner. Welcome to the hobby. Beware, it's very addicting....

ps, buy the best supplies you can the first time around. For example: lighting, enclosure, misting system, suppliments, ect.

I really like veiled or jackson's. Which one is generally hardier and which one is less grumpy because I have heard of veiled being grumpy

Veileds are a hardier species and are a good starter cham. They do have big attitudes to. Mine has bitten me a few times.

My veiled Blanche started coming to me on day one she rarely refuses a ride of course she know now most rides end in outside time. I've only heard her his once and that was when my three year old saw her for the first time she ran up to her and blanche was concerned about this. Blanche's attitude is awesome she is more open to me more so than my wife though.

The only major problem I've heard of with Jacksons are that you have to make sure the gaps in the screen of the habitat are small enough so that they can't get their horns stuck. For Jacksons, aluminum screening with small holes like a window screen is usually a better option than mesh. As long as you keep the cage horn-proofed, they should be fine. Watch out because if they're aggressive they can head-but you. They aren't quite as hearty as Veilds or Panthers, but they are in the top 3 for best starter chams. They tend to be smaller than Veilds, which could be a good thing depending on your preferences. They are one of the more docile chameleons, but in my research I see that they tend to like to stay in their cage more than they like "outside time." However, it all depends on the chameleon! Good luck! :D:p:LOL:
