New Veiled owner

Hey everyone I just got a Veiled cham he's about 3 inches from nose to vent, I have him in a exo terra mini tall 12x12x18 with the mesh top. I am just curious as to what others have to say about the mini tall housing a cham his size. Also I switched from using moss as a substrate straight to paper towels, I have had better results with the paper towels than with a soggy moss substrate after a good misting.

The first day I had him in the exo terra he seemed very happy he was drinking from the dripper I have set up, ate two large crix and had a three poos. I misted him one time with slightly cold water around the body now everytime I approach the cage he hides... I just need some input from experienced cham owners. I also keep one crested juvenile, and one sub adult high yellow leo.

thanks in advance

I am not even a cham owner yet but I have been reading on the forums for a while now. When you say you misted around the body, do you mean that you misted the chameleon directly? This could be the problem. I have heard from several people on the forums that mist the plants and areas around the cage that the chameleon are not at at the time. Please, someone correct me if I am wrong, but I have heard of several people doing this and people told them not to mist the chameleon directly. Good Luck!

My chameleon loves nothing more than a long, warm shower in the mornings... He would be pretty disappointed if I stopped misting him directly :D

Hi! Your veiled will grow to be the size of that tank if not bigger. Soon you should get a screen 18"x28"x36" cage and a big 24"x24"x48" cage when he is not adult. Many people hav had success with exo tetras but the one you have is very small and he will soon outgrow it. You can get the big test size exo terra but the screen cage is MUCH cheaper.

I'd say you will need a bigger enclosure rather soon. Veiled chams can, and often do get rather large. The recommended size is 24 x 24 x 48 tall, but the bigger the better for an adult. You may be O.K. with a 36" height if you have a female. As for the misting, they are all individuals. Some love to get a shower, some like the rain, some are afraid of all things mist . Try to start away from your cham, and gradually bring the spray closer from the tail towards the upper body. I wouldn't spray on the head unless your cham "asks" for it. (at least not right away) I would also suggest warm water when spraying, but it doesn't make too much difference once it is in the air.

thank you for all the replies, I misted basically his whole body thinking it wouldn't even be a problem. Well.. i've violated some kind of trust because he runs and hides whenever he sees me. Even looking at him makes him uncomfortable.. as soon as I get him established and feeding properly I will purchase a bigger Exo terra. Ive seen him drinking from the dripper, as im typing this i can see him tonging the dripper even. also when they are about to shed will there be little white specks on his veil as well as areas on his back and side?

thanks again

Usually there will be a bit of white showing up. Their color may seem a bit dull, and they may look extra dry.

I would like to get the screened reptibreeze terrarium. Im just concerned with keeping the humidity up because i have baseboard heating in my room. I could then move the crested into the mini tall exo.

you need at least a 2ftx2ftx4ft viv for a male Veiled, the Exo terra's unfortunatley don't go that big.

I'm sure anything bigger than that made of glass can get expensive.. he is not totally reclusive at this point he is wanting to drink water and I think if I put a few medium crickets in his cage he would eat.

Sorry, I missed out "adult" in my previous posting, yeah Exo terras are Expensive, think the last time I was looking at getting one they were going for £314.99 (us$508.61)

If you are worried about keeping the humidity up, there are some simple things you can do to help. I Live in Colorado and have to deal with low humidity almost constantly.

First, use real plants. They naturally help raise humidity in the enclosure, plus they look better than fake plants IMO.

Second, wrap three sides of the cage in a shower curtain. This helps to trap some of the humidity in the enclosure and can provide privacy when you have multiple chams and use an opaque curtain.

Third, get an automatic misting system. This will allow you to keep the humidity up throughout the day. There will always be spikes and valleys in the humidity, but overall it will stay within acceptable range, Plus it is a great way to ensure your cham gets plenty of water.

Fourth, use a humidifier. I use a room humidifier to keep the entire room the chams are in at about 40%. The chams cages are constantly between 40% and 90% (after misting). Just be diligent about cleaning the humidifier on a regular basis.

I use all of these methods and have no problems with my humidity in the cages.

Also, LLLReptile is having a Cyber Monday sale on Dec. 2. They will have all of their screen cages on sale. I am hoping to get 2 of them at that time.

Thanks for the tips, I was thinking about getting a small ficus to put in the terrarium for him. As for cyber monday that might be my best bet right there.

Unless you live in a super dry area, humidity wont be an issue.

I live in MD, and I mist my guys every 2 hours for a couple minutes, humidity is never an issue with them.

Sometimes when they are shedding I might mist more, or do a shower chamber, but that's about it.

I read about the shower chamber, If i see more white specks showing up i'll do the shower mist. He just always looks bothered so its hard to tell if hes ready for a shed.
