Cage Info:
Cage Type -31"x21" Combo glass and screen glass on bottom holding 12" soil/peat
Lighting - UV lighting= 15 W super UV Daylight bulb on a tube (with the cover removed for UV exposure) Heat =150 W portable luminaire (don't know the brands to either) schedule= 7:30am-7:30 pm and there is also natural sunlight coming through the window.

Temperature - thermometer reader reads 80-85 (depending on time of day) in middle of cage and 90-95 on her basking spot. Lowest overnight temp= 70

Humidity -Misting 3x daily for about 3-5 minutes (we use a full mini bottle worth each time)

Plants - 2 live ficus, branches (were oven dried before placing in cage) a fake vine

Placement - cage is placed on a piano bench at the moment in our living room, usual place is in bedroom on the computer desk that has no computer lol, due to the height of the desk and the cage, she is a little above eye level, not much, but our ceilings are pretty low

Location - The great North, Kanata! (Canada hehe)

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Female, 1 year, Veiled. We have had her for about 2 weeks now

Handling - Whenever she wants! Seems to be she's always reaching for us (See my Hello Hello post in general discussion) We figured she would be a good pet for our son as he wants a pet, but is terrified to touch anything (he likes to look at his chinchilla, but will not hold him, he doesn't even like our dog on his lap)more of a really cool pet to look at, however she constantly wants out, tries to escape when I'm feeding or misting by making a run for whoever opens the cage, she'll just crawl all over us. My daughter's nose has scratches all over it lol

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham: crickets with cal supp.
What amount: 8/day going to start every other day as I may be overfeeding with 8 everyday?
What is the schedule: 4 morning 4 night
How are you gut-loading your feeders: don't know too much on this, but they get orange slices, potatoes (sweet) and lettuce (I only get a couple crickets at a time as we just got her and wanted to see what to do, are not planning on raising crickets though)

Supplements - wardley phos free calcium
ingredients are: cal carb=37% vit e=min 10 000LU ascorbic acid=min 1200 LU vit D3=min 100 000LU vit a=min 110 000LU menadione sodium bisulfite complex=min 136mg d-calcium pantothenate=min 90mg thiamine mononitrate= 6mg

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use: misting and little cup of water attached to side of screen. How often and how long to you mist: 2-5 minutes w/ spray bottle 3x's/day Do you see your chameleon drinking: out of the cup yes (that's how she came to me, don't want to change anything and mess her up lol)

Fecal Description - urate= normal white feces=normal consistancy and colour (brown)

Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? I don't know

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you: her tail was lost in some unkown accident, either a nasty fight with her sister when little, or the previous x 2 owners children catching her tail in the cage door

Current Problem -

Well, Miss Fred has been circling her cage pacing and hangin out at the bottom of her cage in the soil/peat mixture she has scratched a little but the will proceed to climb back up and then perch on her basking spot, then repeat the whole process again. She has been in our living room for a day, only because we finally revealed her to our son for his birthday yesterday, (after hiding her for a week in our room, he wasn't allowed in our room because our "floors" were being redone and there were nails everywhere;) what little 5 year old believe lol)
anyway, she'll be back up to our room tomorrow where she will enjoy her solitaire again.
Now, after this long post, I have a couple questions
1) is this egg laying behaviour?
2) do I have adequate egg laying environment? 12" soil/peat mix, easily diggable

If she is digging at all make sure you don't let her see you watching her.

Its hard to be sure if she's looking for a place to lay eggs or just exploring her cage.

Not to do with the question you had....but...
I'm not familiar with your lights or your supplement but I dust at most feedings with a phos.-free calcium powder and only twice a month with one that has d3 in it. Your supplement also has vitamin A in it from the sounds of it (not beta carotene) so you could be overdoing that too.

Also...I don't know if that substrate can cause impactions or not. Do you free-range the crickets/insects or hand/cup feed her?

Feeding is free range, should I look for a straight up cal supp, and then just dust 2xs/month with this one?

Kinyonga has good advice. I tend to verge on a different method and it works very well for me. However, each has their own expertise. I like to use Rep-Cal Calcium w/D3 phosphorous free, for chameleons kept indoors. -(every other day for Juvenilles, twice a week for adults) So Mon. Wed. Fri. I give them this, then on Tues. and Thurs. Herptivite dust crickets 2 times a week. However do your research some opinions vary on this issue. Therefore, you will have to make an accurate decision on what is working best. The weekends I go supplement free. I also like ZooMed Reptisafe drops in my water, it claims that it has electrolytes and removes harmfull chemicals from tap water. Also, I have heard of using Vitamin A, w/ retinol palimtate every 10 day, just smear a gel cap on feeders for eye health. This is also not for sure but many experts recommend it. Good Luck, and as far as your lights go, I am not sure what you have exactly. However, I like to use a linear UVB 5.0 and a basking light w/ the correct wattage for temps. Make sure your monitoring temps. and humidity and all should go well. Also, if she is digging do not watch her or let her see you! Another clue she may be ready to deposit eggs is a fasting on feeding. One more thing, I like to put there egg laying box in a 15" tall clear plastic bin that is about 3' wide, this way I can see more of what has taken place. Good Luck, others on here will be very helpful as well.

Most of the members here keep the floor of the cage bare. It's easier for cleaning and your cham can not eat the soil and become impacted. Here's a link to a laying bin my husband made for our female veiled to lay in.

You can also make a smaller container about 12 inches high to keep in her cage. My girl would have nothing to do with the small container so my husband fixed her this big one.

How long have you been keeping chameleons tkilgour? How long do yours live?

D3 from supplements can build up in the system. D3 from UVB light or sunlight won't as long as the chameleon has a place to sit where it can get away from the UVB/sunlight...so its safer for the chameleon to get the D3 from exposure to UVB IMHO.

This is very true, this is why I cut back as they age. As, I mentioned it is controversial. Vincent from screameleons recommends the same and has it in his own hand book for panther chams. Also, the UVB 5.0 is great but the cham. does need a place to retreat from the rays. Also, D3 from UVB exposure is great!

Well, this morning I couldn't find her on her basking branch, and lo' and behold she had dug herself a nice deep hole lol. She's still been at it for the past 2 hours now. She'll dig, then come up, go in head first, then tail first, come back up lol (btw, I'm not standing over and watching. she's across the room and I can just see her movements) I was able to 16X zoom in on her with my camera and videotaped some of it. Will post later :)

Do not let her see you looking or she may abandon her hole and could become egg bound.

Nope, we actually have these cloth napkins around it as to give her privacy lol She's been going at this for quite some time now, how long does it usually last?

Would she stay down there until she was done, or would she take breaks? I turned her lights off at around 7:30pm and then at 8pm noticed her at her basking spot. Her one hole is half covered, could she have gotten too cold and will go back tomorrow if not done?

Well, she has been back to digging all day today. I filled a crockpot and put it in her cage, but she likes the grounds better still. Will update later (not that their fertile, but just so she doesn't get impacted)

Usually will stay if undistrubed. I would only be concerned if in hole longer than 24 hours. Most of my girls lay over night, and finish filling in the hole by dawn. Veils will have a skinny appearance after laying. If not all laid may return to digging, but if only one or two eggs left, will more likly expel remaining like poo.
