Ok So how did you Chameleon Fetish Start?

When I was a young girl, I saw what must have been a veiled chamelon at an exotic pet store. That was probably in the early 1960's. I have always loved "critters" and had rabbits, guina pigs, lizards, turtles, torts, dogs, and every possible pocket pet imaginable.

I grew up, had my own home, got married, (husband not too keen on 'critters'), had a kid, got divorced, and decided that I could finally (some 40 years later!) have my chameleon.

I read books, studied on line, went to a reptile show, and bought my guy. "Dipped in Butter" (veiled, male, 6mo old) has been here since he was a tiny 2" little guy. He was so named because we figured that the dogs would like him served 'dipped in butter'.

The veiled chameleon was first brought to the United States in 1990 and they were successfully bred at the San Diego zoo that fall, resulting in live hatchlings in 1991.

Perhaps you saw a Jackson's?

I'm not meaning to correct your memory or discredit your post....but saw this as an opportunity to provide this information.

This whole chameleon fever thing is hilarious. I had to have more, I researched and researched for months after we bought our female. I think it was all I could do to keep from buying more. I couldn't understand why I had to have more....Now I know that is just some crazy phenomenon that happens to almost every person who owns one. I feel that I am lucky to have run into them, they bring me so much joy. Words can't even explain

It is amazingly rewarding to successfully keep animals of this caliber.
I think there will always be at least one in our house.

Brad,

It sure could have been a jackson --- what I remembered most were the oven mitt hands.

This pet store was more of a mini zoo. Most of the critters were not for sale. I asked my (81 year old) dad about it after reading your post, and he recalled the pet store. He remembered monkeys, and some kind of preditory cat, ,perhaps a jaguar being there. What he also recalled was that this pet store later (in LA, Ca) had a terrible fire, and the only animals that survived, were a flock of parrots, that somehow got free. Those parrots and their descents still live wild in the west los angeles area !!!
