I just picked him up at the Tinley Park show a week ago. I'm in Mn and I have a prefab screened enclosure about 3'x18"x18" but have him in a room with my ball pythons on a 6 ft. schefflera with a misting system. The room is 83 during the day and 73 at night. Humidity is about 60% from a humidifier. The room gets very little traffic, i'm in there a few times a day. I have a 160w Exoterra Solar Glo lamp about 18" above the top of the Shefflera, set on a 12/12 schedule. Since I just got him home I am not handling him much, every couple days i'll pick him up for a minute or two. I'm using repti-calcium to coat my crickets. I noticed that his eyes werent open for 24 hours so I took a closer look. one eye had a little booger in it so I was able to carefully get that out and now that eye is open. The other eye is still closed and I cant see any booger/obstruction in it. Thanks for any help. He is a Melleri about 18 in. long

How are you watering? Mellers-especially the wild caughts like you get at the shows-need a ton of water initially to get them hydrated-and that is why the shower was suggested.

I wonder if the 160w Exoterra Solar Glo is the cause of the problem.
If it emits too much UVB for a cham, perhaps?
I also suspect that his cage is way too hot.
If your room temp is 83, how hot is it inside his cage?

To quote briefly from MelleriDiscovery.com
Comfort Day range: ambient 65°F to 80°F
Night range: 70°F down to 50°F
Heat spotlight only: 80-90°F
Heat stress is observed when the ambient temperature reaches 83-90°F

I rescued a panther and one oif his eyes was always shut and has some crusty stuff around the edges i used a surynge with warm water and did the best i could to wash the eye out then put him in the shower for 20 minutes ever dayand in 4 or 5 days the problem was gone. Not saying it s a definate solugton but its worth a shot:)

big guy.....

The Mellers definately like a more montane cooler atmoshere......vitamin A is a big cause of eye problems in big chams...they are born with plenty, but it is depleted as they grow. The big chams grow fast and use much more. The wild caught/farmed animals are not properly fed when being held for shipping and not for a short while after recieved here. Its something he will adapt to unfortunetly.....if it was a lighting issue it would be both eyes and would show some stress signs of sleeping alot. Just gonna guess,is it the left eye? They do like it rather dark in the inclosure....
