ordering online...

So looks like if I want a chameleon any time soon, I need to order off the internet.. I have found a few websites that look promising.. however, is it really safe to ship a cham to upstate NY in the winter? or should I wait until the weather warms up a bit? I'm really nervous about shipment.. I know that petstores get them shipped to them, as well, but I wish there was a breeder near by me.. With all of my looking, I cannot find anyone near by.

One other question, for a first time chameleon owner, what species would you recommend? A Veiled? Those are what I've been looking into.. i really like the horned species, but I want a hardy one too lol

Im not sure about the shipping.
All of our site sponsors are reputable breeders.
If you contact any one of them they will let you know if its safe to ship or not.

I only have experience with jacksons and panthers.
Vields and panthers are most recomended for a beginners chameleon.
I recommend a panther;)

I know it sounds scary, but shipping is pretty safe. Breeders will put two or three heat packs in the cage and since they ship overnight, the box will stay warm the whole time.

You can look into Jackson's if you like the horns, they aren't hard to take care of. You just have to look around for captive bred ones, not wild caught individuals. My first chameleon was a Jackson's and he was great, super docile and calm. They like it a little cooler and more humid but that's not hard to do.

I'm still doing so much research about them. I want to find the right resources.. I live in upstate NY, and in an old house.. it gets dry in the winter, and can be quite humid in the summer.. it will probably be a few months before I have enough money saved to get the right equipment that i need alone.. My husband isnt thrilled with the idea, but I can't get over it lol.. Do I have to breed insects too? I'm not too crazy about breeding insects lol, but I guess I can get over it.. I have alot more research to do.. I just dont want to feed it roaches. I absolutely cant stand roaches :/

Shipping a cham is really pretty safe. Things do happen from time to time but as for the large percentage it all goes well. I just had one shipped to me. Breeders will watch for the weather on all end to make sure its good enough to ship and will pack them with heat packs accordingly.

You don't have to breed bugs but it is cheaper. I had a roach issue too. But then finding out how nutritional they were and the fact that they don't stink like crickets I went for it and now I don't think about it. If you can afford to pay for bugs fine... but cheaper if you buy your own.
