Very nice pics Jann, LOL love the shots of Heather sitting on her butt. :p

The second and third pics in the first post is indeed a prehensile tailed skink. I hate the name monkey tailed skink. It was derived to avoid confusions with the abbreviation name, PTS. This is often confused with pink tonged skink. Their price increase is simple. The Solomon Islands where they are native, has banned all export of this animal. They are in sever risk of extinction due to deforestation and over collection for the herp trade. So the only ones available to us in the US are either CBB or LTCs. I still really want this species, but as I'm now having to pay over 500 a month for my clinic treatments they have been back burnered, along with other chams I wanted to work with. :(. Hopefully things will look better for me financially this next spring.

I veiw this bann as a good thing, having worked with countless imports in the past, I can tell you they often come in, in very poor condition and have a mortality rate as high if not higher than WC Melleri.

edit: breeding this species can be more complicated than the most difficult species of Cham, excluding Parsonii of course, and when you do finally get a breeding group 1-2 babies a year is the norm, with the occasional set of triplets.

I was at the show today and saw the frogs. I believe they were labeled as Albino Bullfrogs. I could be wrong though.

Yes, Steve, I noticed the sign when I went back Sunday and it did say albino bullfrog.

Fool2Think, I ask the girl about the cute hairy animal and you were right...she said it was the 3rd. large rodent, Patagonian cavy.

jkoskosky I agree.....more chameleons at this show than I've ever seen at a show BUT some of them looked to be in bad condition. It was very sad for me to see them.

The prehensile tailed skink was a real cutie!!!!!! The one I was holding was one of Dr. Alfonso's babies and Pure I do think he said they were triplets.

Yes Syn, they were expensive altho at another table a vendor had one smaller than Dr. Alfonso's and he was asking $500.00 more.

Mike, It was very nice seeing you again!

I also got to meet Chris Anderson and Heather at the FL Chams table. It was really nice to get to pick Chris's brain a bit! They had the best looking chameleons at the expo.

500 each is a steal! Babies are often in the 900 range. There was a guy at the Daytona show asking 2500 each for adults.

Great pics, looks like it was an awesome show. Better than what I've heard is the norm for this show.

Dr. Alfonso's asking $700.00. The other guys was selling a younger one for $1200.00. ($500.00 more)

Thanks for posting those great pictures, Jann! I was at one of the Repticon Orlando shows last January (as a vendor) and I remember they had such a wide variety of different animals there.

Ah I see what you're saying now. 700 is still a really good price. The main breeder of these, and the largest captive bred group in the US, Argama International, is currently trying to sell all their stock. And 900 seems to be the going price for a baby, adults are in the 1200-1500 ball park. Just looking at his KS add he's dropped his price for adults to 1000 each or 900 each if you buy a group. http://www.agamainternational.com/pages/monkey_tailed_skinks.htm

Just an FYI, it's the origional founder's son selling off the animals. The origional owner died a little over a year ago.

Jan, you were very brave to hold this guy without gloves. They usually aren't biters and are actually a very "nice" skink. But those nails can rip your skin to bits.

Great pics. That Uroplatus looks a little skinny/dehydrated. We have a male that looked not quite as bad. He's been tough to rehydrate, but then Chams1 (Julie) came over while she was here for a show and told us about a great way to rehydrate the giant leaftails. And it's working!

The interaction of members during these shows, and the shared information on detailed husbandry issues and little tricks is a huge plus! I would encourage everyone to go to shows when they can, even if you don't plan to buy. You'll learn a lot just by standing around a chameleon booth listening to breeders talk to each other. I know I learn a lot each time.

So, Jannb- what did you come home with? :)

Shannen; The little monkey tail was gentle. He didn't scratch me at all. He did lick me a couple of times and I thought....if he were mine I could probably get him to give me kisses. My daughter has a leopard gecko and she gives my daughter kisses on the cheek.....so cute!

Sandy, Luie and Camille free range my house and Luie would never allow another chameleon in my little 900 sq. ft. house. All we bought was a large cricket keeper for Lizbeth and I got feeders for Luie and Camille....500 crickets, 250 wax worms and 250 super worms and if Lizbeth comes home anytime soon, I'll share the worms with her. Oh, and we got one of those water systems to go in the cricket bin. But as you said it was really nice talking to all the other cham keepers!:)

Sandy: Glad to hear that your fimbs are doing well and responding to my "method"!

I couldn't agree more. I think everyone should attend shows if they can. Not only for meeting other people on the forum, but also for bouncing things off of others and learning different things, even if it has to do with other things besides chams.

Um..... those skinks have one of the nastiest bites out there, I would pass on the kisses Jann

The tame ones are cool :D another defense for them is " the firehose " or that's what I call it anyways lol

A few more pics of the Prehensile Tailed Skink

The little monkey tail skink was so cute I though I'd post some more pictures of him. Guess you can tell that I liked him.
