Kai is right around 4 months now and his reds are starting to come in. We both think he's a very handsome guy!

I am pretty sure your "he" is a she!!! Where did you get him(her) from?

Oh, boy. We got Kai from a local breeder. Any chance Kai is a male? Would a vet trip to get him/her sexed in person be worth it? We're first time chameleon parents and have to admit we are worried about the risks of a female becoming egg bound.

We are already attached so I don't think Kai's sex will change things. We just want to be prepared for each sex's particular needs.

No, a vet will not be able tell you anything. You will get a better answer on here than at a vet as there is no way to determine sex other than by observation. There is no probing like they do on snakes or anything like that. An experienced breeder should be able to sex them pretty much out of the egg, but I have seen mistakes on on here too, but not very often. Your chameleons rostral(the tip of his nose) will stay smaller also and it will not have the vibrant colors like the males. This comes a little later in maturity and then that along with the tail base can determine sex 100%. Ataraxia is a breeder also, so I would take his opinion over mine, but we both agree female.
